Wonderful. New neighbors are having a party or at least testing out their stereo with horrible music. I wasn't invited, but it seems like I'm in the middle of it.

Do you want to come over and watch the Australia F1 race? Liz and the kids are in Palm Springs so it's just the pets and me. Starts at 10:30.

In college we had some local highschool kids sublet the apartment upstairs one summer. While we were studying for MCATs, those delinquents used the apartment as a clubhouse for all their friends. Ridiculous noise all night long.
So one weekend morning, when all three of us in our apartment had to be out at an early hour, the last guy out from our place put his speakers on his closet shelves, turned them facing upwards, and cranked some Alice in Chains as loud as he could tolerate. I think he said he couldn't go higher than about 7 or 8 before his ears were hurting. He said he got some satisfaction out of shutting off his stereo after about 15 minutes and hearing people walk around upstairs.

When I was in college the band would practice in the big grass field in front of the house I lived in. One morning we put the house speakers on the front porch and played great gig in the sky full blast. We got a letter from the university. Also the band retaliated and played the theme from star wars on our front lawn the following monday. Next home game we took the mirror out of the bath room and shined it in all their eyes while they practiced. We got another letter from the university after that. Next home game we started hitting golf balls at them while they practiced. We got another letter and a cease-fire was agreed to. The band would not play before nine on weekends. Most home games were at noon so we were up drinking by nine anyway.

Morning guys.
When I was living in the other house the neighbors had a huge party complete with DJ, and it was frigging loud, and it went on till 4am. Well me being the patient person I am I waited till sunrise, before I took my Peavey classic, and ran that into my Ampeg head with the 4-10 Sunn cabnet, and decided to envoke the spirit of Jimmi, in the front yard. I can tell you when you use that much power and a Dean Flying Z, the results are simply amazing in a very hairband kinda way. People who were passed out under the bushes were running for cover. Later that day the neighbors told me that was a cool way to make my point but very cold hearted. We never had that problem again.

Guess I will jump in on the back in the day noise abatement thing.
College, 2 bedroom apartment was bottom half of two story house. Room mate was going for geology. Any time it got too loud we rolled these huge rocks my room mate had down our hallway. It made huge thumping noises and shook the house like an earthquake. Got very very quiet very quickly. The entire year we only had to do it 3 times and the upstairs neighbors never said a thing to us about it.

Stijn!!
At my first apartment the neighbors liked to work on their car at night since they worked the graveyard shift.
They would crank their stereo way up with country & western noise so the could hear it downstairs. Then they would run up and down the stairs and they would slam the door. After the second night of that I pointed my speakers at their apartment and put in my 8 track player with Ozzy Osborne playing in an endless loop. I cranked it way up and went to work. They were quiet after that.
