Just run 'em 'til the cords show. Isn't that the PPOT way?

Maybe the PARF way.

The right rear is down into the wear-bars. The left rear is a 64th or less away from that point. The fronts have a 32nd or so left. All 4 get replaced. I can't see running with different types of tires.

The rears on my car are down to the wear bars--the fronts are almost there.

But isn't there less squirm from the tire treads then? Won't this make the tires grippier? Heck, don't the real racers shave down their new DOT tires to get them to this point? **

My last set of tires got real greasy when they were worn down. I was happy to replace those tires.

I will be driving around in north UT in two months. I prefer some tread for the inevitable rain. I know some of the folks on this board never drive their Porsche in the rain but my car came with windshield wipers right from the factory. It gets driven. I have only driven it 62,000 miles in 16 years so I don't drive the wheels off it. I avoid rain when I can but I do drive it on road trips.

It is plenty interesting on the interstate trapped between two 18 wheelers in the rain while driving a car as small as a 911. I prefer to look at interesting scenery, not be part of the landscape.

Drove home one day on R1s in the rain. Not interesting at all, more like ice.

Just like driving a 25 year-old car. (Or 19 year-old Italian motorcycle.) Every trip's an adventure. Will we make it or not?

I did the Targa California last year on tires with little tread. They were just approaching the wear bars at that time. 1) Good thing I had no trouble. 2) Good thing I didn't know how little tread was left until after that high speed run in the rain.

I know the idiot mechanic that does the vast majority of work on my cars real well. He feels safe loading up for another long road trip. Last year was Savannah GA, a track day at Roebling Road and a safe drive home. No issues. Things happen to old cars. That is why I have a unlimited towing package on my insurance.

When that (expletive deleted, cuss word, profane word) deer tried to jump through my 911 just outside of Max's home town my insurance man offered to have my towed home. I just got the windshield fixed in San Diego and drove home. Driving through LA a 5:00 PM with a smashed windshield is not much fun. I bet that deer had even less fun.

This was actually somewhat of an experiment to see how much rubber was left before cords after the tread was gone. I know guys run their RA-1s to the cords so I figured I might as well find out how far down the sticky stuff goes. Don't want to waste any of that expensive rubber.

Evening guys, well had the water heater up and running by 9:30 am, started to clean up the mess and at lunch time I took Lanna out for a mind numbing, through flogging. Beautiful day, too bad it started out with me spending money (on a house that is on the market) and inventing cuss words.

Welcome Back D. Vas and I were one day away from sending out a search party. AKA trying to find your phone number and calling you

Back when I lived in Alabama we had a neat place to autocross. It was several acre concrete pad with two 5,000 foot runways on each side. It was a military installation near Dothan AL that they did not use on weekends so we got to use it. I think it was called Hunt Air Station. Man that is testing my old brain cells.

One weekend my tires were pretty much shot but I wanted to play some more. I put the cones up on the entrance of the runway and I had my own mile long runway to play on. I would get up to 60 or 70 and yank on the steering wheel and start spinning. I managed to scrub all 4 tires down to the cords. I had to drive back home to Montgomery and it was about 90 miles as I remember. That was scary driving on cords. Those are the things a 20 something kid does in a 914.

I replaced those tires with Michelin XWX, which was the best tire on the market.

I think, if I am lucky, I might get half the summer out of my RA1's. They are slicks now, you know just right.
