It's a tough job but somebody's got to do it.

Guess what i found on the 03 Tacoma while getting it ready for state inspection.

That's why you gotta move to Cali, where we don't believe in safety inspections.

But if your airbox or muffler doesn't look stock, watch out.

Really? I have not had a problem with the cut airbox on the 911. As long as there are no hoses on the side that is removed, you can do what ever you want to that side. No restrictions.

I told the Toyota rep that is pretty strange that the original exhaust has out lasted the frame.
He didn't have much to say. Supposed to be getting a call from them tomorrow.

I just went down to my car to check on it and clean the bugs off of windshield. It rained so hard it knocked the sand and parking lot crap up onto the wheels.

Crap. I need a hose to wash that off.

Intake or exhaust, you've gotta have a CARB sticker on something if it's not bone stock. You may not have ever been called out on it, but that doesn't mean it fits the law.

That is odd. Living in Boston, my exhaust would only last 2-3 years before I'd have to go to Midas.

Sorry, not true. You can do whatever you want to the top of the airbox, as long as it has no hoses on it that feed back into the intake or vacuum. The 911 does not have any hoses, the Toyota does.

To get a perfect balance it is necessary. You can get close with inside only, but to get a dead nuts balance, it has to be ugly. There is 0% shake or shimmy at any speed.

Hell, I have no wheel weights on the back of the 911 and it's pretty smooth.

Well, that wasn't my experience when I had my Nissan and bought parts from Stillen or GReddy. Most of their intakes do not (did not) have CARB approval, and catalogs usually contained language to the effect of "off road use only."

Those applications usually removed the airbox, though left the throttle body intact. Do you think that's the reason why they put in that language, because of the removal of the airbox? FWIW there were no hoses from the airbox going anywhere. Usually the airbox would be replaced by what looked like a velocity stack capped with a K&N or other foam-type air filter.

The top of the 911 (N/A) airbox has two purposes. One, keep the air filter in place and two, cut the noise down on the intake side of things. Okay, the snorkel also tries to pull a little cooler air. But that's it. Nothing more. It does not affect emissions at all, therefore CARB does not care.

I understand and agree. But replacing a muffler/exhaust from cat-back doesn't affect emissions, either, and it's a no-no from a CARB perspective.

All I can tell you, is that it is legal to chop the top or modify an airbox similar to the 911. As long as the top has no hoses that feed back into the intake, it's all good. I can't legally modify the airbox of the Toyota unless I get a C.A.R.B. approved box.
