I know Pete.... These sick bastards up here seem to think a few inches if snow is acceptable.... I'll have none of their nonsense, so I'm leaving.

It doesn't bother me so much because I know it comes from a place of ignorance but I think back to the Japanese Americans living in Hawaii at the time. I remember reading about the treatment the Japanese Americans serving in the US Navy got after the attack. But yet they were so proud to be part of the US and called their own people "them". I guess the same way my parents think of the Communist Vietnamese. My father served in the US Navy and my mother worked for the US Army. To this day, if they hear somebody speaking with a Northern Vietnamese accent, let's just say they aren't exactly cordial.
Tweze, the people of the greatest generation lived through a horrific war. The Japanese attack brought us into the war. For any serviceman that served in Germany and saw what the Germans did to the Jews is scarred forever. The "Japs" were beyond brutal in China. Throwing Chinese babies in the air and trying to catch them on a sword is not the worst. Google the Japanese occupation of China. It will shock you. They were brutal to any POW. Every citizen back home was forced into rationing. My own parents talk about flower and sugar rationing. My grandparents had to drive on bald used tires because the tires were rationed and the were not allowed to buy more tires for several months. Try to imagine going to the grocery store and being told you are not due any more of a product because you did not have the ration stamps. It will work up a hate for the people that caused the war. Virtually everyone knew someone personally that lost a brother father uncle or neighbor. All because the "Japs" attacked us. The reality is we would have likely gone to war eventually. The attack awakened a sleeping giant that was pissed off.

Glen, I totally get it. That's why I posted what I did. War is a complicated thing. Like I said, even my parents won't speak of their experiences. That's why I never really got offended when somebody called me Jap. Even though mistaken, I understood where they were coming from. Whether wrong or right, people live their life by their past experiences. As I have gotten older, I have a deeper understanding of the consequences of war on a country and even down to the common folk.

I agree with, Azzy. Doesn't make sense, all of it. How we can't see when it comes down to it, we are all people trying to live on this place called Earth.

My dad told about the local butcher couldn't sell ground beef because of the rationing stamp stuff. The butcher was only allowed to make so much, the rest was sold as cuts for lots more money. My Dad tells about letting his temper get the best of him, going behind the counter, throwing a side of beef on the block, and cutting a big chunk out of the middle ruining any cuts you could make. Then storming out throwing some money at the cashier, all while the butcher was yelling and screaming at him. My dad was a big guy so that's about all the butcher could do to try to stop him was yell and scream.

The next time dad went to that grocery they came out greeting him all nice as could be. Because he had ruined that side of beef they were allowed to grind it up for hamburger and could sell a LOT more of than the cuts normally allowed.

During this time my Parents lived in New Jersey. My mom says the grocers wouldn't let her shop there, buy anything, talk to her, and wouldn't take her money because they didn't know her. My dad had to go tell them she was his wife before they would let her shop in their store. My dad said it was because the store keeps in that neighborhood were Jews.

I am watching the game as well and I am conflicted. My dad played linebacker for Navy back in the 50's but my daughter was in the Army as an M.P.
