I was always told it was made from a primitive plastic derived from soybeans, not hemp...

Henry (the First) experimented with both hemp and soybeans. He wanted to control the manufacture of his car from start to finish, including the raw materials.

Hemp was a useful industrial product...way back when.

Long, strong fibers created good interlocking fabric. Neutral acidity meant the material lasted a long time. Easy to grow and bug-free without the need of Monsanto-brand chemicals or seed.
-The original Levi's were made of it.
-The burlap storage bags and sails of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria were made of it.
-The United States Constitution is made of it.

It used to be illegal for farmers to not grow it in the original thirteen colonies.
George Washington grew it, Thomas Jefferson grew it.
During WW2 there was a need for industrial materials. "Hemp for Victory" was the call. China utilized it. India utilized it. America utilized it.

Dirty pot-smoking hippys is another story. We're talking money here.

Th fibers of hemp could still be useful today if it were not for laws based on faulty knowledge. The plant grows faster than a pulpwood forest and thus can provide more fiber per acre than wood. The long strand fibers are useful in both textiles and papers.

I am not a smoker, or a hippy, but I have done enough reading on the subject matter to know that there is no real reason for us to no be taking advantage of this crop in an age where environmental conservation is of concern.

Source of biofuel?
Oh yeah.... it's been done. Hemp can be a basis for both bio-ethanol and biodiesel.
