any body start back playing the sport you lived for as a kid. My son is 9, I'm 52 and in really bad shape but he lives for hockey so I decided to lace em up after a 25 year absence. I played Jr. and mens triple A, evan got drafted but never called to camp so I could skate but is it a battle now but I'm going to stick with it, been out 5 times now and the old magic is slowly coming back and I love it. All my gear still fits except the pants and shoulder pads due to a big gut and a good set of man breasts, and after all these years my gear still smells.
So whats your passion and have you started back at it? Try it, you won't regret it |

I played tennis growing up and loved it. I'm not as old as you, but I had given it up for many years. I picked it back up a few years ago, but all of my partners moved away or joined the military. I don't have the money to join a tennis club or I would. I love to play. I recently started to play with a friend who never played before. It's fun, but not the same until he's up at my level of play. Wish I could play more.

I played football and have the knees to prove it. I wish I could go back and play. The mind is willing, the spirit it there but unfortunately that is where it ends.

I'm 43 and still play ice hockey 1-2 times a week. I grew up playing thru college and then took an 8 yr break. I was never a D1, or Jr level player but good enough to keep playing competatively even over 40. I think Its the greatest one hr workout you can have while haivng fun. My two sons play now so we are in the rink A LOT but its all worth it.
Its funny telling them the old war storries like when we practiced on the pond, the pads were made of cotton and wooden sticks cost $5......

Football was the game I loved but one back surgery and two bad knees mean I won't be playing football anytime soon.
I still manage to spend time in the boxing ring (heavyweight division ) but it's not as ferocious as it once was. We're too old for that now. Instead of trying to kill each other it is more of a chance for conditioning and technique development. |

Played hockey since I was 6. Was fortunate enough to play comp, Junior A (USHL), and D1--then Sr A. Allowed me to travel alot and see many parts of the world I would not have seen otherwise (Scandinavia, Russia, Europe, Canada, and all over the US etc).
Was goalie, but now my turn for revenge and play out in the "mature gentlemen's league" up here in Anchorage. The name of the league is not always apt however ![]() My son is just starting to play at 6. best sport in the world to play. A.B. |

Do yourself a favor. GET NEW UPDATED EQUIPMENT.. Do not rely on that old stuff for protection.. |

When I was a kid I loved hockey and I still do now.
There was a period of time when I was so done with it I didn't lace up for 13 years. Playing summer and winter hockey, I found myself being the last guy on the ice and the first guy off. I was disappointed when I realized that I was going nowhere and had a few dickheads for coaches. I quit. 13 years later I laced up the old Tacs and skated by myself on an outdoor rink. You know what it was that captured that old feeling? The sound.... The sound of your blades digging into rough outdoor ice. The sound bouncing off the boards. It was like falling in love again with something that you didn't know that you missed that badly. I am still playing today... I hope I can still keep playing for a while yet.

I raced BMX for 20 years, even after I stopped racing, I still rode. Last year I got the bright idea start racing again & earn 1 last state Plate, but my knees were really acting up (have had one fixed) and asked my Doc about it, he said

My three sports were skiing, basketball and tennis.
Stopped skiing when my back went out. Still live with a bulging disc but just prefer not to crash on the Cornice Bowl anymore. Varsity in Basketball and played till 5 years ago. Have worked so much and gained 20 lbs but started shooting around last week. Rusty but getting better. I soon plan to join open-gym in Laguna when I can run up and down for 30 minutes. Always played tennis but also stopped 5 years ago. Started 2 weeks ago and really enjoying the return. Tiring at the end of the second set but getting much better. LOVE it when they think you are an old man, and then you show that you use to play. Really shocks people that you might have been in shape once. Hope to keep up both...

I loved playing hockey as a kid and in high school. Was not good enough for D1 in college but was good enough to play D1 in soccer! Blew my ankle out and had to quit playing. Did everything else from skiing, mountain biking, windsurfing and such. After about a 10 year layoff of not skating my buddy convinced me to skate again. That was 20 years ago and I have not stopped! I have been playing men's league at the local rink ever since. I have noticed a drop off of my talent as the years have gone by. And a 50 years old I have been the old man on the team many a times. Started out in the B leagues and have dropped down to the C-D leagues as the years have gone by. Love to play, have not been hurt too bad, and the best part is I now get to play with my son who is 19! In the summer we play on the same team with about four other father/son pairs! It sure is a lot of fun, and the kids get a kick out making fun of us old farts! Most of us have been coach's since they were about 6 years old. Just before dropping my son off at college he asked if I plan on doing the ice rink again this year in the back yard? It is a lot of work and the kids had a ball though out the years on it. But it just won't be the same without the kids to skate on it. Rink is 145'x90' and with no help, I think this might be the last year. I would rather skate inside now than freezing my but off! I guess I am getting old!
And just this past summer I dusted off the mountain bike for some real trail riding again. Feels good to ride, but I think the trees are closer together now as I keep hitting them!

I played AAA hockey as a goalie. Played in senior elite and over 30 elite until 2001. Can't play now because of bad hips (I don't think anyone can be a goalie forever; too hard on your joints). Now I do a lot of cycling.
My son played travel hockey but is in college and playing broomball.

Your kids won't be playing hockey in Ann Arbor.
An embezzeller recently took over a million dollars out of the AAAHA, and then bought lavish gifts for herself and her family. -Instead of immediate prison, the Judge gave her probation, and told her to repay 16cents on the dollar!!! -She won't even pay half that, and remains free. -The league is struggling to exist. http://annarborchronicle.com/2009/08/28/column-the-criminal-calls-the-tune/ (edit: sorry for the thread highjack) Last edited by john70t; 09-06-2009 at 07:09 AM.. |

How any non-profit org can allow one person to handle funds (most require two individuals) is beyond my understanding.
Unfortunately, in this instance, the kids are the ones who suffer.

That is truly a sad story, the kids suffer and that sucks, team sports for kids teachs so much as far as team work and being part of a common goal goes. to have some twat wreck it for kids and parents is a shame. she should be put in net with out gear and have all the affected people take shots on her till death. Thats a bit harsh but what she did is terrible, I hope the league survives, she can rot in H

Wow, sucks they would embezzle from kids.
I probably could still play baseball pretty well right now, and I am 46. I have lost a step or three, I bet I could not run a sub 5 s 40 yd to save my life, but all the parts work, and I have done the maint. Would take some time to get the arm in shape, time I don't seem to have.
