Justin wasn't really bothered at all. Just surprised. I'm 100X more annoyed than he is.

While I disagree with the direction the Court is going with ever increasing police power, I have to deal with the law as it stands presently. Thus, in Justin's case I know the officer would say something like "We had several instances of students drinking at the dance. I saw the suspect turn the corner after midnight and when he approached and saw me he threw a container in the trash can. I made a brief, unintrusive investigatory stop to determine his identity and activity on the campus. When I determined he was not drinking, I let him continue on his way."
I have no doubt Justin was behaving himself and doing nothing wrong. However the officer did not know him or what he threw in the trash can. Yeah he was probably rude to Justin but that is not a crime. And in the end the campus cop believed Justin, too. I don't agree with some of our laws but I gotta deal with the hand I'm dealt. No disrespect Moses (and I certainly understand your ire), but maybe you should let Justin deal with it as he sees fit. Let him choose his own battles now that he's a full growed man. But let's play it out. You write a scathing letter to the President. The cop is called on the carpet. Preident sees officer's side. Nevertheless President writes you a concilliatory letter to calm you down, Justin gets branded as a rich doctor's kid who's throwing his weight around. Campus police all know him now. OR...Justin runs into the cop again and the cop remembers him as a polite cooperative student who was not drinking when a bunch of other kids were that night. HMMMMMMM

Final note and I'll shut up. Good looking kid you justifiably are proud of. But in the past six months I've represented seven different 18-20 y.o. college kids who are good students, from good families who are equally as clean cut on the following charges: DUI, possession of controlled substances (pot), felony sale (pot), DUI contriolled substances (pot), grand larceny, minor in possession (etoh), auto burglary, statutory rape.
So count your blessings. Oh yeah...two of the kids are doctors' children. One, both parents are MD's.

The officer may think that being a hardazz for a few nights at the beginning of the quarter will pay big dividends if word of mouth spreads around campus that "these cops aren't messin' around... they're not gonna let anything go."
Just another version of what Jeff said... this is this officer's version of putting out his vibe. ![]() Tell your son to pick his friends carefully... hey, what's the fun in THAT?... just kidding... he probably already picks carefully... and when he can, it's probably a good idea to walk across campus with one or two other people so in a similar situation, it's not just his word against the cops.

I suppose campus police is a necessity in US. In Sweden its unheard of. Awful start for Justin and possibly worse for his dad. Innocence lost on the alter of security. In every profession there are individuals unfit to deal with people. That goes for police as well as the medical profession.
Sorry to hear about this, Moses.

That is what I was gonna say.
They have some awful good dope in Eugene, or that is what I vaugely remember from my college days. Lot of petty theft, especially in and around the dorms. Sounds like your kid is more philosophical about this than you are. You got that paternal defense thing workin' on you. At 18 I would have been popping off pretty bad to that cop, especially if I knew I had done nothing wrong. Make sure you sign that letter Dr Moses and cc a few people, not just president of school.

i work in a student city.. every friday when i drive to work, i see the human cadavers walking back to their student flat.. You'de have a harder time finding a student here , that doesn't drink then finding one that does.
It's not like in the US, where most go on campus, here the uni's have facilities across the city, and students rent houses with some friends they know, and shack up, or rent a room, there are some campus dorms, but even those are nothing like what you guys have.

My second night in the Dorm I wound up drunk and errr laying face down in my own vomit half in the room and half in the hallway. While the RA walked by telling his friend it just best not to see things like that.

thinking more about this...if i was the campus cop, i think i would have busted out some serious detective skills, i mean really dug down deep to my finely tuned training, think outside the box and conjured up some uber CSI skills, and before talking to Justin, walked over and.....peek into the garbage can.
what an idiot.

Moses, Rather than being pissed you should be greatful... From the sound of your post, it appears that you're the kind of guy that squeals if the police aren't present but when they try to do their job and it involves you or your family, you "squeal" even louder.
If they have a zero tollerence then how else are they going to enforce that rule? They have the right to check, in this case, they checked, discovered that he had not been drinking and left. Give it a rest and don't squeal....
