Anyone here lend through Kiva?
I am a big damn supporter of micro-finance and really believe that the more money people have, the better fed they are and less likely to be persuaded by radical groups.
Take a look--you get paid back and can use the $ to re-lend or withdraw. Kiva - Loans that change lives PS. I have no ownership stake in kiva. Just like the idea

I did it a couple of years ago. I helped fund a lady from Bulgaria who wanted to start a clothing store, and needed to buy a car. It was a great experience, she paid me (and the other investors) back within 8 months..well ahead of schedule.

Yep, I've been relending the same small pot of cash for quite some time. Interesting concept and I hope it's truly helping some people.

Just lent $25 to Shade Olaleye, who sells plastic bowls & baskets in Lagos. She still needs $275 - anyone else care to give her a hand?

I lent $100 to Ramik Altut, a fisherman in Somalia, to upgrade the guns on his boat.

Heh heh... if things go well, he will probably be able to pay you back real soon.

I concentrate all my lending in the Middle East. My hope is that when the crazy dudes try to tell them how evil we americans are, they will at least think for a moment. And I saw how quickly things turned around in Mogadishu in my unit once we helped them rebuild their schools and homes.

We can set up a Pelican group and lend in that name. Easy to do--I set one up for my family in the name of my grandmother, who was remarkably open-minded and giving for someone of her era.

Do you receive interest on Kiva, or is it a lend $1, get repaid $1 thing?

The way I read it, the lending partners that Kiva funds are assigned a risk rating. Those with 5 stars are the least risky while those with 1 are riskiest. The people that meet their criteria are put forward for sponsorship. I figure if the folks out there looking to better their lives have been vetted, then I'm going to try to help. The upside is they can pull themselves up, and the downside is I might lose $25. Pretty good risk/reward in my book. |

I've spent five weeks in Port Harcourt and a day in Lagos. Anybody trying to improve their situation there by expanding a legitimate business, not matter how humble, gets my support. |

I've been lending since April of this year and have attached a summary of the loans.
The delinquency stat moves around a lot, sometimes under 5%, sometimes 20%, but so far no defaults. You're notified when people have paid you back and you can re-lend or withdraw. Jack
