90 ROW CAB to CANADA

hi guy's,

ok, Have confirmed my visa has been granted and this guy is now planning on coming over to canadia.

pending sale of house...

one thing I am toying with is bring the cab over.

Now from what I have found put that age of car (91/ reg. in 90) that I only need a safety in check when it lands

now obvous things I can think of

1> Speedo is dual kms/mph (though might see if I can source a KMP one)
2> headligh units I will need to source ones for LHD

Anything else?

3>I dont have side markers, although, thoes are piss easy

we have ovber here

1> Annual ROAD TAX
2> Insurance
3> MOT (every year, road worthiness)

what is the equivalent in Canada ?

am I likly to be really hit by insurance?
as RHD in LH country,
am I better to get say a boxster? or 968cab
although the prices for thoes seems quite high

NOT sure what I can get for her on sale

ideas pls

thanks

Welcome to the great white north! Now take off, eh ya hoser?

I can tell you that, at least in Ontario, you'll be fine with dual miles/km speedo - so long as it has kms, it's fine if they're the smaller numbers on the dial. You won't need to go through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles because it's more than 15 years old, however because it's less than 20 it will need an emissions test. (again, this is Ontario, may be different in other provinces)

I don't know about sourcing new headlights - I would think just re-aiming them would be sufficient. By side markers I'm assuming you mean turn signals? If so, don't worry about that, at least I didn't with my ROW 911 that doesn't have them.

No annual road tax, though I'm sure it's buried in our income/property/sales/gas/liquor taxes somewhere (welcome to the land of taxes...). No annual safety (though I'd argue it should be required), but you'll need an annual emissions test until the car is over 20 years old. There's talk of changing that law, but AFAIK it hasn't yet changed. Insurance seems to be all over the place. I pay about $150/month while the car is on the road for full coverage on an agreed value policy (again, if Ontario, demand OPCF 19A from your broker, not 19, must be 19A) - you'll need an appraisal. Some guys are paying less, some more. Insurance in this province is a racket.

If you do decide to sell and buy another car, most of look to the US - prices are a bit lower, and the selection is vast compared to here. Importing is a pain, but do-able.

If you're coming to the Toronto area, there are lots of Porsche nuts, plenty of good Porsche mechanics and tons of events, including a weekly get-together, and we have one of the world's best racetracks in our backyard.

Neither should be a problem in a safety check. My US car is in miles. You might want to do the headlights so you don't blind people but I doubt that it will need to be changed. The safety is just a basic check - wipers, washers, brakes, lights etc.

Not necessary.

No road tax.
Yes to insurance. Rates dependent upon location, vehicle, usage, age . . . the usual.
Smogging for cars after 1987. see Drive Clean But it is not annual.
No MOT annual check.

Your car might be worth more in Europe than here. Some research might confirm or deny.

I dont think its the aim, (well it could be) the lens surly will be different?

Insurance am worried about,
as RHD, sports car (apparently RED and exported are heavy rated?) also new driver as far as Canadian auth's are, but will see

Mrs drives so can get on her insurance if poss

I still may sell the car here, but nice to have the porsche as ON seems to be s2 free?

I would carefully consider your choice of bring over a RHD car over here. Chances are it is probably worth more in Europe anyways. A RHD drive care will make it very difficult to make any left turn at an intersection and you probably won't be able to pass on any single lane roads (all the fun ones around here are single lane).

Matt get an excellent point...is that 911 so exceptional to you that you have to bring it over here...As Christien said....there's a vast pool of
porsche cars down the border...and since the Can $ is face to face with the US $, the damn choice is easy to make when buying a Porsche.

+1. And you don't want to be driving a 944 cab in the Canadian winters. If you need a cab buy a boxster and put a hard top on it. Otherwise there's a few nice 968s on the market in Canada. You wont be able to sell a RHD car here.

+1!
I am always amazed that they allow RHD vehicles on the road in Canada for anything more than a show or collector car. I regard them as being a bit hazardous on the road.
If one was ever involved in a serious collision, I wonder if there could be a lawsuit brought against the motor vehicle licensing branch that deemed them to be safe?

it'll be a summer car..

I dont like boxsters compared to s2's as a cabriolet even with a wind deflector boxsters arent as good.

Though point taken about hard top.

although......... I'm kinda thinking about changing up from 90 car to something newer or even a different car altogether?, convi, merc/bm? or even go yank tank

you wont see much at this time of year but also check http://www.pcaucr.org/

If you wait until March or April all of the cars come out of storage and you will see twice as many for sale compared to now.

Are you shipping a container over with the car in it? I would think that shipping a car would be fairly expensive.

same applies to LHD's brought over to here.

no lawsuit at all

so how difficult is it to overtake/and turn left at junctions in an RHD ,
I then ask ?
