Watch "Marty" starring Ernest - Acadamy Award, in the 50's.

My father in law did not think much of Mr Borgnine, had only seen him in From Here to Eternity. Gave him a copy of Wild Bunch and it turned him into a fan.
Apparently, when he was filming Marty, some of the guys from the neighborhood were going to put a beating on him for his treatment of Sinatra's character in that flick. He talked them out of it, helped in this by being able to speak Italian. He related this story in an interview I saw. I don't think I have ever seen anything Mr Borgnine was not outstanding in, great actor, heckuva guy

McHales Navy when I was a kid. Thought he was just some old actor, then saw in some older movies and moved up a notch or two in my assessment.
Then again, the old TV show "It takes a Thief" I was watching and my Mom said "Is that Fred Astaire?" And I said "Who". He was Robert Vaughans (I think) father in the show.

He deserves our respect. Happy Birthday Ernie!
~~~~ Borgnine joined the United States Navy in 1935, after graduation from James Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Connecticut. He was discharged in 1941, but re-enlisted when the United States entered World War II and served until 1945 (a total of ten years), reaching the rank of Gunner's Mate 1st Class. His military decorations included the American Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp, and the World War II Victory Medal.
