Whats this '71 2002 worth?

This is the description the seller gives....

Quote:

1971 BMW 2002. White with blue interior. Engine has been rebuildt, vehicle has been in storage. Would make good restore, or a ralley car, it is a roundie 2002. Vehicle interior is in good shape. Comes with extra trunk lid from a newer 2002 convertable, and an extra transmission. Just replaced the brake lines in the front. Engine runs smooth. Over 100,000 miles. Believe it good be a good daily driver with a little TLC. Very little rust, none in the floor pan and strut towers. Only rust is in the spare tire area and below passenger door in rocker panel.
Looks clean in the pictures too....

It amazes me that people run an ad like this and don't proof read. Link to the pics?

Send the seller a check for $10,000 and have him agree that he will not sell you the car at any price.

This way, you'll have lost less money than if you bought the car and fixed it up.

Cheers,
JR

Cool looking cars but they are made of iron oxide.

Halm 03-01-2010 09:14 AM

PM "karlusmagnus" here on Pelican. he recently sold his Tii and is pretty knowledgeable.

porsche4life 03-01-2010 09:33 AM

Guess I should have mentioned I was wanting to pull a "onewhippedpuppy" on this thing.... Whats it worth in its present shape with a good cleaning?

JR don't worry about me and projects... That VW learnt me a lesson... I sent it your way yesterday and washed my hands of it... Lost ~1200 and consider myself lucky...

vash 03-01-2010 09:42 AM

LOVE those cars. good friend had one in college. i had the privilege to be his passenger, when he put it into a wall. it was a cherry 2002Tii. we almost (came this close) to hugging and crying. we lived, car didnt.

what is the asking price?

porsche4life 03-01-2010 09:44 AM

Guy is asking 2200.... I wouldn't feel right If I didn't chew him down 200 though... I got chewed down 200 on the VW.... I feel its only fair to pass the buck....

Well, it' s a roundie, and roundies are nice ;-) The problem with those - I have one - is that no matter who does the work, you'll end up spending twice what it's worth, if not 3 times... ;-(

They're fun little cars, the engine is cheap to modify and upgrade, the parts are available and reasonable, but they ARE made of rust! And it's kind of a VW GTi market, lots of them around, lots of kids buying them as first cars for a song and modifying the crap out of them, and as a result of all of the above, the values have a hard time rising. Even for nice ones... Tiis are the cream of the crop for resale, but you can beat Tii performance for less money with carbs mods or modern fuel injection...

I know some guys on the BMW2002FAQ board who have $20-30K in restoring them...
Me, I have over $13K in the car including purchase, and it's worth 8-10 on a *good* day !
It's one of those cars that sucks you in with its cute looks, good handling and innocuous purchase price - then when you are hooked, it reams you with restoration costs ;-) For the money i have in it now, I wish I'd bought an Alfa GTV instead. But it's fun ! And people LOVE this thing... They damn near kill themselves catching up with you in traffic just to give you a thumbs up !

(New head, fuel injection, 5 speed box and brakes from a 318, rust repair, trunk lid, hood, interior stuff, wheels, exhaust, brake lines...never ends)

I agree completely.. Of course, I still have what's left of my first car, a 71 roundie, and someday I will spend way more than it is worth to fix it back up..

And there is nothing wrong with that !! :p As long as you know what you are getting into... It's rather like spending $30K restoring a 911T instead of a 911S, except even more upside down. If there ever was a car where one should BUY a complete restoration, that's the 2002 - possible the Alfa I want as well... but I never learn ! The lure of the cheap car is strong !

porsche4life 03-01-2010 12:05 PM

So are you guys avoiding telling me a number so I will run? Cuz.... if I could buy this drive it for a month or two and make grand I would be all over it....

No, I'm avoiding giving you a number because I have no idea what it should be... Seems everyone finds superb cars for $500 and I could not find a halfway decent one for $5000 when I was looking !

I *think* the current price is fair IF the description in accurate... I paid more for my car... Then again a stored car might have more issues than one that is currently running... and your rust in the rockers could be that the car is about to break in half... hard to tell from distant blurry pictures and a seller's description...

Go see it?

porsche4life 03-01-2010 12:13 PM

I might have a chance to go look at it this weekend. Unless you guys don't think I stand a hope in hell of making any money...

nostatic 03-01-2010 12:20 PM

Buying a 40 year old car that is known for rust issues and hoping to flip it for a profit? What could possibly go wrong? :p

porsche4life 03-01-2010 12:22 PM

I obviously wouldn't buy it if it was a total rust bucket.... Guy might not like me rolling under it with a creeper and poking around but too bad....

Rot 911 03-01-2010 12:27 PM

There a plenty of 2002's in that shape going for less than $3K. No profit to be found in that car.

cairns 03-01-2010 12:43 PM

As one who owned an Alfa 2000 GTV I would say keep the 2002. Unless you speak fluent Italian and have lots of time, money and FF miles. You think BMWs rust??

As flattered as I am that flipping a car is now known as a "onewhippedpuppy" ;), I try and avoid cars that will likely break in half or explode during my ownership. The bad thing about buying an old car with the intention of cleaning and selling is that you never know what you'll find. Once I find it, I don't feel right about not disclosing.

DanielDudley 03-01-2010 04:35 PM

If you want a 2002, get a really sound one. Or go right to an original M3. Euro 635s are really nice, but only get an M6 if you are a fanatic. Many prefer them to the 911, but they are in between the 911 and the 928. A 635 stick is a great car.

it's a great time to be buying early 911s.

Did you say "Jew'ed"?

Rust is everything with these cars. I had many. If rusty, they fall apart like wet Kleenex. Good news is that BMW supports their vintage cars and has many parts still available.

porsche4life 03-01-2010 06:13 PM

Sure did.... apparently its a racial slur....

I think it's actually a religious slur. Jewish is a religion. The only way you can get away with saying that is if you are Jewish yourself and kidding around with other Jewish people. Otherwise, someone is going to get real offended. (And rightly so).

The 2002 advice on this thread is solid. Probably a lot more solid than that car. There is no such thing as *minor* rust on those sleds. And only bone-dry, rust-free 2002s are worth anything. I'd take a Pasadena on that.

onewhippedpuppy 03-02-2010 02:23 AM

Feel free to say that you "catholic'd down" somebody in my presence, I won't be offended. Of course that might just mean that we went out and got drunk, I'm not sure.

Not trying to resurrect a 2000 yr. old+ war, but..."Jewish" ain't a religion, Judaism is. And the Jews are a tribe. So "Jewish" is both a religion and a people.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled (and non Anti-Semitic) BMW 2002 thread:

You are absolutely correct, I mis-typed there. Are you Jewish? Shalom. But what kind of name is Ocean? ;)

BlueSkyJaunte 03-02-2010 11:18 PM

He's Jewish on his mother's side. It's the only one that matters anyway. ;)

911FASCINATION 03-03-2010 04:40 AM

Hi Folks, I'm really glad I clicked on this-I've always wanted a 2002 and found one roughly equivalent to the one in question, although it had low miles and was clean as a whistle. It was $2500 and had "a little rust"-I'm guessing it's one of those cars that once you see minimal rust you're in for big structural problems. True?
