Is there a way it could be modified so it couldn't fire and become a display piece?

12ga. 6.5" barrel. $5 tax stamp. Perfectly legal to own/sell/possess/carry (if your state allows it):

Don't believe everything the gov't tells you.

Uh, if you had a questionable weapon, why on Earth would you call the BATF? What other "splain'ing" do you need? "IF" I'd inherited some firearm, I don't think I rush to the State to "register" it, maybe you would?

you might be able to offer to disable it and keep it

or

1. tell BATF you WILL donate it to them for their museum, but you want the value stated in writing so you can take it off your taxes

2. tell them you want compensation for the "takings"*

dunno if those will work or not, legally

* normally, applies to real property but maybe it applies to, or can be made to apply, to chattels

Hugh what part about that fact that I had it for sale and that I had an interstate sale pending don't you understand. I've had it forever and could have kept it forever if I had just kept it under wraps. However it was listed on a national auction site, that BATF cruises all the time, I had a sale pending and I had to ship it. You just don't go shipping firearms over state lines without doing it properly, ask any FFL holder. I am not a license holder. So I have to use the proper channels to conduct the sale. Nobody could tell me whether or not it was legal or not. Had I just shipped it, had it been discovered later by BATF, say the person I sold it to tried to resell it, it would come back to me and it's jail time. Better to call them and give it up than go to jail.

I asked them about that and they said uh...no. I DO plan on getting a receipt of some kind.

" This is classified as an Any Other Weapon under the NFA, and is subject to a $5.00 tax stamp and background check. It must be transferred to a Class 3 dealer in your state on a Form 3, where you can receive it from them on a Form 4."

Mine does not fall under that category.

If I was you I will recommend to lawyer up ... a quick Google search will show that a few people have the same billy club from the same manufacturer on display on their web sites (not for sale but 'for display only')

Not sure what year it is (doubt is pre-1899, not a firearm but rather an antique) but if you want to keep it I am sure that there is ways to make it 'inert' and have it 'legally' (2nd Amendment notwithstanding)

I was just correcting your FFL dealer that "under 10 in. & firing 12 ga. is an illegal weapon."

Good advice but at this time I think I just want it out of my life. I have a nice collection of legal firearms and I don't need any hassles with them..(BATF)

You validate my point about how misinformed people, even ones in the biz, giving advice. Better to go to the source than go to the joint. hell what do they care they aren't going to prison and having their gun collection taken away.

Hmm...I seem to get most of my bad advice from government employees.
