not tryin' to spend shotgun money here. once i get to $500 i start thinking 28ga wingmaster or bps and fooey on pellet guns.

.22 Short CB cap is perfect in any bolt action .22 rifle. Or just about any CO2 rifle. Even sigle stroke pump pellet guns have very little "pop" and that can be mitigated with a simple muzzle brake/muffler.

Crossman still makes, I believe, an adjustable CO2 pistol for close work that can be dialed down to very low levels.

Should cost no more than $200 for any of these setups.

Well that's over. The agent was just here to pick it up. A very nice guy. He felt bad about taking it and told me so. We talked guns for an hour. He assured me that because of condition he would submit it to their archives. Anyway it's out of my life now and I still feel I did the right thing, and may have put in good grace with at least the agent. FWIW.

As long as you feel good, that's all that matters.

Hmmmm...this illustrates how different areas of the country/agents might interpret the law differently. I have no doubt the local guy I talked to would let you keep it...or at least written you up a permit for $5. Just out of curiosity did they offer you a means of keeping it or did you just say "Meh...not that big a deal? Besides, I wanna stay off their radar..."

Sounds like the whole experience made you feel they were generally reasonable and understanding and not the gun confiscating nazis.

Well I guess relieved would really state it. I have too much at stake here to be messin' with the man.

Sorry about spanking you the other day, this thing had me pretty stressed out.

Hi jim,

I was waiting for to weigh in. I hoped that you would not feel offended given the calls you made regarding the matter. yes I did ask him if I could just pay a tax, get a stamp and be done with it. He told me at one time they had a grace period that you could do that but I was past that window. I didn't press it. He seemed genuine in that he felt bad about taking it. He gave me his cell number and we said we should go shooting some day. Called me sir a lot. He liked my dogs. He said he would do his best to get it sent to the archives. All in all a pretty good experience that I'm glad is over.

No...not offended at all. As I said in my initial posts (#83), I didn't totally agree with the local agent's initial assessment after reading the law myself. But that was his ultimate opinion after calling his central office and getting input from them.

I, too, found the ATF agent on my end to be quite reasonable, polite, etc...it was if he were trying to find a way for it to be OK to keep. Go figure.

Anyway...shows you the law can be quite gray and not entirely black and white.

Its a shame to see some folks making light of the general distrust and suspicion supposedly 'free' Americans have for an agency charged with limiting our 2nd amendment rights.

An upstanding citizen was told by his own govt that he was not deemed responsible enough to own a particular weapon. I call that a tragedy.

David I don't fault you man, just not happy to see the result.

had there been a test of character for keeping it, i would have passed. but there was no test, only a law. i am law abiding, for the most part. it makes it less complicated. my old man always told me ya can't fight city hall. in my youth i thought he was wrong. the older i get the more i see he was right. I do have rights under the 2nd amendment, however because of people that have abused that right, guys like me have to live by rules made to protect us from the abusers. A sawn off 12 ga. in my hands is no threat to anyone but an intruder. In somebody else's hands it's a deadly concealed weapon used to take away my freedom or my life. I get it.

A clear conscience is a wonderful felling. I find no fault with you giving up the club but rather the laws that forced you to surrender it.

"The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that... it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."
--Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
--Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria in On Crimes and Punishment (1764).
