I like the way she's drawn.

Revive,

I got a 2009 PSE compound bow with hard case, arrows, release, whisker biscuit, great sight at a good price locally. Went and target shot all afternoon yesterday and have to say I'm hooked. The bow is awesome and I can group three in the center at 29 yards. Archery is something I did a few times in my youth with a recursive and this is my first compound, but I have to say it's so relaxing for me, it reminds me of kayaking, I get real peace out of it and enjoy it.

I don't know if I will ever hunt with it, but it's now in my blood for life.

good for you. archery is weird for me. i am a perpetual tinkerer..with archery, this is not necessarily the best thing. i took a perfectly good bow..one i was surgical in shooting with and sold it.. bought a new one..hated it..then bought another one..back to surgical, got a new part..messed it all up..had to buy new strings, messed it up some more..and now just today, got it shooting again..talk about insanity. i am not blessed with the ability to leave well enough alone. damn!!

it is pure madness. today i was hitting a piece of paper the size of a big postage stamp at 30 yards. even with a broadhead..i am gonna sight in to 90 yards tomorrow..if it dont rain.

Old thread... ;)

I've been shooting weekly since starting this thread. I'm actually getting pretty good.

I started on a recurve, no sights, no rest, no release. Would shoot until the fletching cuts started dripping.
It made me a better archer when I started using the toys. It'll also teach you to shoot quickly. Still don't use a release. I'm a tab guy. I seem to need the string feel. Still got that first bow. I cut a older woman's yard, and when she went to pay me, I asked her if I could have the bow instead. After a few seconds of thought, she gave it to me.

Traditional Archery is much different than shooting a compound. You could develope bad habits caused by shooting traditional. On the other hand, IMO, traditional Archery is pure talent. Traditional guys are like 911 guys, purist.

 what kind?

Lots a people shoot traditional by holding the bow on a 45 degree angle drawing back, hitting the anchor point and releasing.... shooting a compound bow, it must be held vertically, no tilting.... draw back, anchor, center the sight, squeeze the release trigger (if shooting a release...) focus on follow through.... So, the bad habbits are tilting the bow and too fast a release.

I did some tournament archery in college back in the 70s and still have my re-curve Bear bow. It is a relaxing sport that lies somewhere between rifle marksmanship and golf to me. technology has changed a bit since 1979 so I have no clue about the modern gear but I would still probably choose re-curve shooting for traditional reasons.

stealthn 03-10-2014 09:58 AM

Best analogy yet!

island911 03-10-2014 11:24 AM

@Yel..

Well now I'm just scratching my head more. Back when I was into it, I always held (traditional re-curve) vertically and never used a release. I've shot a compound bow only a few times. Seemed to me the only difference was the hold force needed. IOW, I'm trying to understand why a compound bow must be held vertically. ...what are the physics ... balance rods?

cabmandone 03-10-2014 11:50 AM

Check out Diamond archery. They have some really nice shooting bows.
I shoot a Bowtech General and really like it but I don't shoot competition.

yel911 03-11-2014 03:59 AM

island911, my description was "typical" shooting forms.
Traditional bows can be shot on an angle or vertically, same for a compound. If a compound is using sights etc, it must be held vertically, because of form and consistansy. See some pics below:
