If you understood anything about Apple marketing you'd understand that this was not a leak.

Even from an economic standpoint it makes no sense. All it would do is hurt current iPhone sales.

Dont get too excited. First you need a 4G network.

jyl 04-21-2010 06:50 AM

The title of this thread is misleading. It is not, by all reports, a "4G" phone in the sense that it needs/works on one of the next-gen cellular networks that, as you point out, have not been deployed. Or even on WiMAX which some people call 4G.

Edit: I'd better clarify. We know it runs on the current-day 3G network. Can't rule out it having LTE/WiMAX-ready components too, though I think that's improbable.

Is it running on wimax then?

JavaBrewer 04-21-2010 07:36 AM

What is so compelling that someone would 'upgrade' from a 3g or 3gs?

porsche4life 04-21-2010 07:57 AM

Hmm I just had a thought... That uses a smaller sim card. Wonder what one of those will cost...

Micro SD, they are cheap. Had them for my Nokia E62.

porsche4life 04-21-2010 09:32 AM

The SIM card is the little chip that contains all the data from AT&T... Can't go buy one of those at radioshack... Have to go to the AT&T store...

gtc 04-21-2010 11:20 AM

Isn't that the iPad nano w/ phone app?

porsche4life 04-21-2010 11:21 AM

WTF are you talking about?

Yeah, had not really looked at the spec on it and thought it had a micro sd slot.

slakjaw 04-21-2010 11:56 AM

I may be wrong but I dont think ATT has rolled out 4g yet.

jyl 04-21-2010 12:29 PM

That is correct. ATT has deployed neither WiMAX (if you called that 4G, anyway ATT doesn't seem too interested in it) or LTE (they've said this is what they will be doing, some pilots in 2010 but bulk of rollout is later).

Can I ask a stupid question. What makes the Iphone worth the cost for everyone? Specifically a college kids (excuse me old men) who have access to the internet 99% of their sober lives?

I've certainly been tempted by the cool gizmo's and the ability to check email while I drop bombs in a public bathroom. Then I sit down and do the math and I figure it'll cost me a set of SSI's that first year, all the sudden that coolness is lost. Yes, anytime I look at a re-occuring cost I figure it into Porsche parts:)

I can see the uses for a professional who travels from business meeting to business meeting, etc. It just seems to me everyone has an Iphone and I can't for the life of me figure out how it is worth $60 a month for so many people.

A "smartphone" is just a convenience. Whether it's worth the $40/mo over a cheap voice plan, depends. I like it. What I use:
- read PPOT when waiting in line, at airport, etc
- find my way around w/ maps and GPS, don't have a PND
- email and voice
- HP12C and HP11C, I think RPN
- Chinese and French translation, conjugation
- iPod
- look up calories for my diet
- watch Youtube when bored
- watch stocks and markets
- take notes in meetings

- bigger battery

- higher res. screen

- I assume it has more capabilities -- micro SIM use implies more circuitry in the approx. same size volume

has more button & front facing camera too
