You are going to have to stick with the lighter bullets in that .44 mag Marlin, oddjob. I had one years ago that didn't like anything over about 220 grains. Those things retain the traditional twist used in the old .44-40, which was 1:38 to stabilize its 200 grain bullet. Lots of folks have been after Marlin to fix this, but for whatever reason, they won't. I traded mine off for something else and picked up a Cowboy Limited in .45 Colt. It has a 1:18 twist. The .45 Colt can be loaded to match, or even exceed .44 mag ballistics in that rifle. Mine loves 270-300 grain bullets, which the .44 would never stabilize.

If you are going to scope it, these things just cry out for a scout scope set up. I ran mine with an XS Sight systems rail for awhile, before I decided scopes and lever guns didn't do it for me. It's a pretty cool set up; it mounts to all of the receiver holes, plus the rear sight dovetail. I put the Leupold scout scope on it. Great combination. As much as I liked it, though, all three of my remaining Marlin lever guns now wear the XS ghost ring sights. I really like them.

what we have been looking at is the XS mount similar to the new marlin guide gun. XS sights and picatinny rail.

what we are wondering about is the simplicity of buying a zeiss reflex scope with picatinny rail mt. and being able to place zeiss on different platforms we have with picatinny rails already on them. lightweight, simple, solor backup. looked at one real close at the zeiss booth at the last NRA show that came here.

me likey zeiss reflex scopes.

that way depending on mood or species hunted we can move zeiss from spoon to spoon.

my m-1 carbine is crying for a zeiss and so are both the .357 and .44 1894 marlins. 140 grain hornaday for the .357 and 225 grain for .44 mag from hornaday.

these hornadays are wicked rounds. upon impact plastic(nylon) compresses via hydraulics and flattens bullet out for massive expansion. their self defense round is the same except without pointy tip for lever actions. my sons 3x4 elk can attest to the effects of his 45/70 hornaday leverevolutions.

Dude...how much money do you got?

Putting a Zeiss on an M-1 carbine? Or a lever action?

Seriously?

snipe the goal IS: to get 1(juan) zeiss reflex and move from platform(spoon) to spoon. yes they are spendy lil buggers. but since each round basically (.30 carbine/.357/.44nag) falls flat on its face at 200 yds we figure readjustment of windage elevation cant be that tough. a few sighter confirmation rds on each platform should do the trick.

Well, god bless ya, your spoon expenditures might actually be the only thing still keeping this economy afloat...

I didn't even know Zeiss made a reflex.
