I think REI has (or use to) the best bang for the buck. I have done any back packing for a long time, but have done many of the back side of mammoth and up in the Tahoe area during the summer months with a tarp and a few ropes. Young and dumb then. Always have a nice mummy bag. How much humping or walking are you doing? If you can sneak in a two man tent so you can keep bugs out of your food.

I used a bivy sack on a trip once, and I swore that I'd never do it again. Generally uncomfortable -- claustrophobic, impossible to control temperature, hard to stay dry, etc. I have a small, 2-man, lightweight 4-season Mountain Hardware tent you can borrow if you like. With tent + fly + poles it weighs about 5 lbs. The other option, depending on the location would be a warm bag, ground tarp, and a single pole "bottomless" tent.

I used a tube tent in boy scouts... OK for low altitude and mild temps... took it on a high Sierra backpack trip... my breath condensed on the inside of the tent and rained down on me all night... not fun.
Spend the coin for a decent tent IMHO worth it.

When I first started in the Wind River Wilderness, all I took was a tarp. It was fine for about a year until one night an electrical storm blew over us at 10,500 feet. It was a VERY long, cold wet night.
Ever since then I always take a lightweight 2 person tent with a rain fly. Can't tell you a specifc brand because it's been ages since I looked. REI will treat you right.
