A million bucks for catching a fish?
Never mind the story about the winners being disqualified, I had no idea these fishing tournements paid such big bucks. I'm going out to get a pole right away. (And a fishing license!)
For this fishing team, $1-million prize is the one that got away

It's got as much or more nuance than golf, IMO.

Lots of fishing derbys offer prizes of $10,000 to $100,000 The bigger the prizes, the bigger the entry fees.
"Tagged" fishing derbys used to be popular around here. Top prize $100,000 (tax free). A fish or several fish were caught and a special numbered tag was attached. If you caught the fish durning the time limts of the contest you won. The organizers payed a insurance company to underwrite the prize money costs.

Dennis Braid of Braid Products probably one of the greatest when it comes to big fish.
Dennis and I worked together back in the day. He went on to bigger and better fish.

There are several $1,000,000.00 fishing tourneys. The Big rock is a great event but not the biggest. The Mid Atlantic $500,000.00 out of Cape May NJ trumps it. With Calcutta's included the prize can go well over a $1,000,000.00 and if you win or place in one or all of the categories well above that. It is unlikely that one boat would get all of the top spots but it is conceivable in that respect a single boat could win several millions.

Compared to the budgets the offshore fishing guys run through on boat/dockage/fuel/alcohol/sunglasses/visor hats and t-shirts $1m is nothing.
If you want real 'nuance' in fishing you might look to skiddish trout in gin clear water no more than a few feet deep or less.

This is local to me, so I'll relay part of the story circulating here.
The Captain asked the Mate if he had a license. The Mate said yes, so they took him at his word. After they were disqualified, and the Tournament was over, the Captain told the Mate that he had left something at the motel, and for the Mate to go and get it. As soon as the Mate was out of sight, they untied the boat, and headed for their home port, Hatteras. The eventual winning fish, would not have qualified for the near million dollar purse if it had weighted less than 500 pounds, but instead would have won a lesser amount.

A little ironic that the boat was named "citation".
