Need some late Summer/early Fall vacation ideas
I'm not a mountain or desert person...prefer sunny beaches. I probably should support my beloved oiled down Gulf coast and just hang out by a pool and weep. Wifey and I considered the islands somewhere...or Costa Rica for a week at some isolated beach resort AI. Bargains to be had in the $2-3,000 range for a week or so for both of us. Done Mexico and Belize too much in recent years...so probably ruling that out.
Plan to travel after Labor Day. Financially it might be smart to go to a Casino on the Gulf Coast for $60/nite but I'd spend way more at the tables Any ideas?

Watch the trees turn. It's beautiful. Or White Mountains, New Hampshire Equaly beautiful, and you can take the trolley ride up to the windiest place on Earth.

Be creative & lift her damn spirits, Jim. Blow the budget & take her to Paris for a week. I bet you that would bring a smile to her face. As long as you are willing to fly commoner class, stay in a smaller hotel in the Left Bank & avoid Michelin restaurants, you could keep it affordable - except for her shopping. Think about it. Seriously.

Charleston, SC is ranked 3rd in the US and Canada by Travel and Leisure. Great place to visit. Lots of beaches too.

No sandy beach, but I'd go to Maine. Camden, Portland, Bar Harbor... lots of boats and time to chill.

yep, V^2 has a great suggestion. Also take time to sail at Newport, RI as the Lubricated One suggests.

Lake Placid NY is also beautiful during those seasons. Great scenery and really nice roads to boot. Quite a few of the hotels are right on the lake and have boats you can take out onto the lake. Definitely worth checking out.

Dueller, I thought you bought a condo in south Miss.
Don't go to San Fran. No sunny beaches there. You could do north of there, however, and see some of the best there is. No sunny beaches there. Or Monterrey and San Simeon. Sorry, no sunny beaches there either. Cold beaches, if you like that. Talking after Labor Day. San Diego area (La Jolla) is nice. Stay at the Del Coronado a couple of nights. The old part, not the new wing. |

Serious getaway? Punta Chivato in Baja or Boca del Toro in Panama, great beaches and not a lot of people. Fishing and eating with some drinking. Not a long flight for you. We stayed on a small island in Boca del Toro, had a great time, the hotel in Punta Chivato, owned by Posada de Las Flores is pretty nice. Stayed there four days, all I could take, totally secluded.

Turks & Caicos?

I was going to suggest Cape Cod. Late summer/early fall is the best time of the year. Summer crowds (and rental costs) are down by then, too. New England in general (from Newport, RI up to Maine) can be nice that time of year.
If you're thinking Turks and Caicos, I'd recommend the Turks and Caicos Club, but there are plenty of nice places to stay there, too.
