Top Gear USA Trailer

I'm posting the link to You Tube, rather than embedding, so you can read the viewer's reviews. Ouch! I kind of liked it, but I'm in the clear minority. I mean, bending a Cadlillac like a pretzel can't be all bad. And moonshining is an American thing, so a good angle.

The presenters will take some getting used to.

Doesn't look so bad. I'll give it a shot, but the guy with the glasses seems extra dorky. I think one of the strengths of the original version is that the guys are all writers. Are these guys journalists?

With you 100%. Only the Brits have Brit humor. Please, don't try to imitate a British fool when only an American fool. They will appear funny while we will appear to be idiots.

Every time.

That show is DOA and if Tommy Kendall ever appears, it will be a death in the womb.

So why do we need Top Gear USA? Ya know... there's a reason nobody ever suggested "Monty Python USA."

I think Hammond has written some books, 4 on cars, but he has been a radio and TV personality for some time. May has done a lot more writing, sort of a fee lance after working for a mag. Clarkson is the veteran of the trio.

Who will be on this new show? Is that Tanner Faust? Nice guy and all, and a terrific driver, but highly over exposed. He must have a great agent.

Adam Corolla has paid his dues over time. I just don't belong to his congregation. And he won't be a regular on the show being replaced by Adam Farrara just another actor/ comedian.

The geeky guy is Rutledge Wood, a Speed TV analyst.

Loved the comment on you tube "This s**t should be called reverse gear".

Whenever American shows are copied in Europe they do it to the T and they always are successful. It is not obvious what they are doing on this show, but this trailer looks like bad news. Here is what I'd do on the American Top Gear:

- Run all the top cars on a test track
- Have a studio audience - same as the UK version
- Have the American Stig - call him (or her!) something else
- As mentioned above, have more professional hosts
- Have professional filming (this is what make TopGear a HUGE pleasure to watch).

If beating a Cadillac to pulp in a field is the trailer for the US version, I am suspicious this is a low budget Jackass type show with a little MythBusters mixed in. NO thanks.

Anyway, since I don't have a TV, I will only have to watch what's linked to on the forums - I'll appreciate the digest.

George

to even attempt such a spin off is lame. Fail.

Is it actually going to air? I haven't seen anything about it on the History Chanel. I agree with the general consensus here that it will probably be an embarrassment.

Let's face it. No production company can duplicate BBC's Top Gear production values without the aid of a country, as in Great Britain. There will be unkind comparisons. Perhaps we apply TARP funds here as some form of compensation.

Thus, to avoid the direct comparison, call it "3 Guys and Some Wheels". They can also save some $$ and avoid paying the BBC for the use of their name. There are several successful car shows. They just need to find an audience here, find their voice and make it good.

And they must dispense with the vignetting lens filters (ala BBC's TG) less viewers think this is actually the real Top Gear they're watching. They're not planning on channeling May, Hammond and Clarkson are they? Yesh.

What a bunch of crotchety old farts you are. Yes, it will never be on par with the BBC version, DUH.

So go enjoy MOTORWEEK on PBS at 6 AM Sunday morning or another episode of PINKS on Speed.

Well, you may not have reviewed the car show, "Battle of the Supercars" with Tanner Foust and Paul Tracy duking it out on the track and on the microphone.

In later episodes, they seemed to inject more driver competitiveness (trash talking) into the mix.

Reassessment?

I think I am younger than the plaid shirt hair-gel fat guy and I still think he sucks.

Moonshine cars make an excellent car topic. If you'd research it well, get some cars on the show and drive them, it would make some very good footage. I doubt someone will lend them their prized historic vehicle though, if this is their trailer.

Wrt Tanner. One of the qualities of BBC's TG is that it's 3 guys that love cars that host the show. Kind of an extension of what we have here on Pelican.

Tanner is a professional driver. I'm sure we'd love to identify w/ him, if we could, you know, like have a job driving cars we only see on the small screen or in a mag. If they are going to have a professional driver, make it a current F1 driver or something like that. Go "all in". Tanner, as a drifter would attract the 20 somethings. Maybe that is what the producers are going after, since the trailer seems to be an episode of JackA55 but w/ cars.

Wait, you have seen Top Gear, right?

Hmm, making a "Space Shuttle" from a car, making a boat from a car, using cars as skeet, dropping a 911 on a camper to kill the 911...

Good call. It would take about a $50 budget to make it the best car show on American TV (anything is better than Motorweek), but calling it Top Gear instantly brings comparisons to one of the most popular shows on the planet. Besides, are we really that uncreative?
