What is it? Pics included
This was in a bunch of old tools I picked up from an estate. For the life of me I cannot figure out what it is or what it's for. Any guesses?
![]() ![]() ![]() That point slides lengthwise about 2 inches ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My original thought was some kind of plumb bob, but I'm not so sure.

The point on the left is for pushing into something, but obviously not with force since it's curved. My guess is next to a wall or similar.
The finger grips on the right is for pulling it out. (Hook two fingers under.) The slider with the arrow dosen't have any attachment for using vertical force, but it could be hammered sideways into something, which may/may not pass through the open center section. The odd-shaped relief next to the handgrip is puzzling. Holder for a rod/bar? Could it be a flag marker for railroad ties? Last edited by john70t; 09-30-2010 at 10:25 AM.. |

Interesting..... can you give us some rough dimensions. It's hard to tell how large or small the item is.

Interesting that you saw and hand grip - what part? I have thought for a while that it hung from a string/rope, but I could be way off.

It's 7 inches long, and about 1.5 inches at its widest point. You can kinda see my thumb in once photo.

Looks like a scale for weighing fish. A really old one.

How about a indicator arm on an old mechanical scale? The pointer is obvious and the little item that slides could be for fine tuning.

Spring in the center, bar passes through to scale on top, got it, but that attachment point should be a hook not a wedge.

From the items in the rest of the estate, what did this person do for a living, hobbies, ect ? Other things there had to be in the same category as this object...What were the other old tools you bought or saw there?
