Someone's breaking in... how much time before you are armed?
SammyG's thread got me thinking...
With a 10 year old in the house, we have multiple steps to get to a loaded gun. If someone were trying to crash through your front door how long would it take you to be armed? What's the safest way to speed up the process?

sammy's thread has me thinking too! i am not so much gonna speed up my readiness; i am going to focus on slowing down some idiots entry.
but i have stuff all over the house. loaded. no kids. when kids do come over, i make my rounds and unload and put everything away. if i am in my bedroom, a handgun is mere inches away.

It had me thinking too...I don't own a weapon. So, if the experts could also add in the tradeoffs for each weapon of choice. Handgun, Shotgun, ?

I have a gun on every floor of the house, and carry one in my truck on the weekends. That and dogs.
I live in a rural area and everyone hunts and shoots. The only thing we worry about are those that have malice aforethought.

5 seconds tops. That's from any room except if I'm in the middle of pinching a loaf (and even then I might opt to get up off the pot, retrieve, rack, safety off and aim which could be done pretty quickly - just deal with the streaks later).

Depends on where I am in the house.
It's waking up and recognizing what is going on that concerns me the most. After that, time to spoon (TTS) is negligible.

instantly. I have no kids so I keep a loaded 40 cal Glock with Nite sights on my night stand. I also keep a loaded 12 GA pump Shotgun in the corner.. My wife keeps a loaded double action snub nose 38 in her top drawer.....I carry the Glock at all times. When I go to bed it sits on the stand beside me

A second or two. We have a fenced yard with three dogs, who sometimes make me a bit nervous, and security doors. We are also lit up at night. I don't see a home invasion dude picking our house in the first place, much less making it to, and through, the door without a welcoming party.

Been researching different safe options lately.
Biometric seems to be the safest in terms of kids in the house but I worry it will decide to die only when I need it. Anyone have any experience with them?

What ever you do just make sure the wife takes them out, a lot less questions are asked!

When my P9S isn't on my person, it's either on the coffee table or in the mattress holster. Aside from that, there's a Kel Tec and a Smith .357 that make their rounds of the house, a full size Mossy 500 in the closet around the corner from the foyer (loaded with 00) There's also the '94 to contend with, though it's usually in my bedroom.
No kids in residence or that visit, so I keep stuff where it's most convenient. |

I have two handguns (his and hers) in a combo-lock case under the bed. The idea is unlock/unlatch before bed, lock before leaving in the morning to prevent unauthorized access by small people.
In reality we seldom have children at our house, so the case stays unlocked and unlatched 99% of the time. Once I realize I want it, I'll have my handgun ready to go in seconds. When nieces/nephews come over the case gets locked, even though they aren't allowed upstairs by themselves.

As long as it takes to pull the 12g pump from under my bed and rack a round.

Run upstairs, tap a keypad, pull out a Glock w/ magazine in place, cycle the slide. 20 sec?
Get a fingerprint or electronic keypad pistol safe, put it somewhere accessible but high. Quote:

Depends on the room. Bedroom, 2 seconds. Living room, 10 seconds. But that's not including being armed with a mind like a computer and fists like steel.
