I dated a girl once who had one of these early "downsized" GMs and I really liked it. If I ever have more money than sense, I will probably buy one:

Not the same car but:

I also like a few other "undesirable" American cars, I dunno...
I used to drive a Toronado every day! Those old V8 FWD GM cars make great float plane dolleys.

OK, you guys are right, those are both really ugly.

Most of the rest of the cars in this thread aren't necessarily ugly, they just have character.

Hmm, well, I've had some ugly cars, and grew to at least be fond of all but 2 of the cars that I've had (80 Mercury Topaz and '81 Olds Omega 2.5L).

Some of the ugly cars that I've had or driven.

I didn't really love this one, and it wasn't mine, but it was the first car that I drove. It was actually my mothers. I did have a fair amount of fun in it though.

1976 Chevette, cream with faux wood applique, 1.4L, 52hp, rear wheel drive.

I was fond of this one, had a ton of fun.

1980 Chevy Citation, 2.8L 6 cyl, 5 spd, full gauges, buckets, console
Mine looked like this except it was gray over blue.

I had 3 of these, '78, '80 and '81. All three had a 1.7L VW engine and tranny and about 80hp. None of them were the Shelby Turbo model. I had a ton of fun in them.

These are cars that I love that many/most would probably think are ugly.

'58 Chevy

'59 El Camino

Here's a car that lots of folks seem to like that I think is really ugly. (I don't have it, but figured it was worth mentioning)

And pretty sad when you consider it's predecessor.

Don't know why, but I've always had a thing for small crappy cars. Maybe since I grew up in Beetles and Ghias. Never had one, but I was always fascinated with the Renault Le Car.

I agree, I've never liked the latest RX-8s either...

I still think the Renault 5 Turbo is one of the ugliest cars ever made, and some people are crazy about them...

Well we own, drive and are passionate about 911s probably one of the ugliest cars ever designed and built..so I guess we all fell for an "ugly" car.

I was looking at buying a 1980 Ford LTD Station wagon last week. It had 135K, original owner, garaged, zero rust, had a 351, and was green over green--he was asking 2500.00 I hesitated for a few days and when I finally called it was already sold.

Strange cars definately appeal to me.

Steve's Chevy posts above...to suggest that the '58 and the '59 pictured are ugly would get ya in trouble at any USA cruise-in.

Interesting story for ya. Friend Stan Mott and his Pal Robert Cumberford worked for GM design back in the day...Stan's input influenced the '58 Chevrolet tail light design. Anybody familiar with Stan's artwork can see the connection...

(edit) Ugly car I could fall for? Always thought the AMC Gremlin was whimsical enough to make the cut.

I had a 1979 Audi Fox that was free because the PO couldn't get it to stay running. I blew the rust out of the fuel line and drove the wheels off that thing. One of my scientific experiments to see how inexpensive transportation could be, per driven mile. VERY comfortable seats. I was not patient enough to finish the experiment. She never gave up, never gave any trouble. Did I mention VERY comfortable seats?

Yeah...the Fox is a little dorky looking, I wouldn't mind a 100LS though...

Looks like it has cheaper VW hubcaps...I kind of like them anyway.

I remember seeing a show on that build, IIRC it has a full tube frame also. So pretty much all they kept was the body and built a whole new car.

Silly but if I had Jay Leno's money I would probably be doing similar silly builds.

For instance I would get Hyundai elantra and leave the body stock and cram it full of engine and suspension to make the ultimate sleeper.

Doubt if Jay put a single dollar of his into that build, I saw the show too, and it looked like GM was coming up with a lot of technology (plus an old mule corvette) for that project.
