Here is an old Klein lighted sign that the Klein sales rep gave me many many years ago when I use to own my bike shop.

I had an old Klein RASCAL that I stripped the paint off then turned into a single speed. Also had an Attitude. Both great bikes as they are stiff and basically a point and shoot bike that climbs and descends really well. Unfortunately it is too harsh for my weak lower back.
![]() ![]() This SyCip singlespeed is a much forgiving bike and very comfortable on long rides: ![]() But for more of a rockier terrain no holds bar ridin', I take this 29er BIG MAMA! ![]() And if I want to go a 'lil lighter and climb all day, a ti 29er: ![]() Even lighter for singlespeeding a ti Lynskey:

Klein was one of our biggest competitors back in the day. I used to work for Fat Chance. Kleins are nice bikes but are quite stiff compared to a steel bike. Some folks like that, some don't.

Nice collection, Cornice!
I had a Litespeed for a few months... too blah... sold it for an outland vpp. I loved that bike, but the pivot bushings wore out and replacements were nonexistant by then.

Well I went to the local bike shop and looked around. The bikes started at around $500 and went up from there. They carried the brands most here talked about. I didn't feel like I was getting much help. Just pointed towards the bikes.
So I started looking at craigslist again and there was another Klein for sale. There seems to be quite a few bikes for sale actually. Anyway this one was close to my house so I ran over and ended up buying it. The bike looks new to me. There is not a scratch on it and everything looks like I just wheeled it out of the store. I ended up paying $600 so I may not have gotten a bargain, but I like the made in USA and the fact that I have something a little different. Here are some pics l ![]()

The tires still have the nubs on them and the painted sprockets still have all the paint where the chain makes contact.

You guys got me all sentimental, so I thought I'd post up a pic of my Bridgestone MB-S, yes it's an "S", their first suspension bike. Triple butted, chromoly, just awesome. Had it new since 94'.
. ![]() And then theres the newest ride a 05 Turner Flux. Just broke in half a month ago on a normal xc ride. Fortunately, I wasn't hurt and Turner has went above and beyond on the warranty side of things, but aluminum definitely has it's limits over time. Makes you wonder about airplanes made from aluminum. hmmmm.....

That Klein looks new. Good buy for six bills. Push push shifters, compact crank, v-brakes, it looks like a survivor, should meet your needs nicely, plus it's a great color. . .
Sleep easy, you didn't pay too much.

Bridgestone MB-2_ made into my daily commuter. Love this bike, but it threw me on Thursday, Dec. 2 and I'm incapacitated as I write this. . . .

A broken Turner... there's a real shocker.
I still don't understand the anecdotal hatred of aluminum here. It's like questioning the use of plastic because a lot of chinese crap is made out of it. From what I've personally seen, frames made from aluminum (and every other material) almost always fail because they were underbuilt (tubing too thin for the application). Fatigue life is RARELY an issue.

"Most" guys that talk about fatigue life of alum frames have really no racing or real training experience. Just a lot of reading or internet surfing. But, they are right about alum not lasting as long as steel. Who really cares if you are racing. A new should be due every five or so years. Its not fatigue but crashes that will end it life. I raced a Cannandale for a good few years. The team change colors and offers us a great deal on a new one. Something like 450, or was it 550 bucks for a new frame. How can you go wrong? I can't tell if the old bike from the new. The new one was smoother. I am sure its a little stiffer if you test it on the machine. I am not easy on my race bikes during training or racing.

DCummins,
That's a beautiful bike. I think you got a great deal. Now go ride with your wife to breakfast with that thing and enjoy it. |
