GRAND-AM Road Racing - Official Web Site

Going to be a fun GT field this year. Lamborghini entering the mix...

Sorry Dan, they shoulda sent you an entry form...;)

Your invitation is probably just delayed because of all the extra holiday season mail. I didn't get mine either. Keep checking often. :)

Cheap racing is right. If I wrecked the 911 on the track, I'd be sitting in the corner, fetal position, sucking my thumb. If I roll the 944 up into a ball, I'll run back to the pits, holding nothing more than the steering wheel, pumping my fist in the air, screaming "Now THAT was FUN!"

Well said! One of my many reasons for shipping the 911 off to Istanbul was the fear of an original never repainted body getting pranged. Whenever I drove it, that thought never left my head.

Me too...That's why I told the salesman that if he couldn't find a Bullitt for me, I wasn't going to buy a Mustang. Not my car, but a nice pic of a stock bodied Bullitt.
Note the "debadged" look. I wish they'd left the faux gas cap with the gunsight logo off too...but that's the Ford way of IDing mustang models. Kind of like the T E and S on the rear lid of the early 911.

Somethings wrong when your racecars have automatic transmissions and solid axles. And not just the drag racing version. The new Boss 302 does as well. ;)

Ford launches Cobra Jet and Boss Mustangs

At least it has lots of wings and fins. And it is red and has big wheels. :D

Not quite all true there...the Boss 302 is a 6 speed manual. Automatics in drag racing? Gee, who ever heard of that? Pretty near everybody these days.

Solid axle? Like I said, let's wait for the Grand-Am series to begin...see how well the Boss 302's keep up with the 911 GT3s, the M3 BMWs, the Lambo Gallardos in GT class...it's going to be interesting.

You're welcome to make a prediction...I don't care to.

I doubt that. My 944S2 is probably more setup than your n/a, and I'd me lucky if I got 6.5 - 7k for it.

By well setup, I mean:
Koni yellows all around, 400lb front springs, 31mm hollow rear torsion bar, M030 front sway, 22mm rear welt sway, delrin bushings, camber plates, solid tranny & rear suspension mounts, 944 Turbo S brakes, cooling ducts for the front brakes, rollbar, seats & harnesses. Corners with the best of them! :)

Oh, and I have ~60 more hp than you. ;)

Back to the OP -- that Mustang "how to drive a stick shift" is about as helpful as watching a pumpkin rotting in a field. And when stopping, it is always best to apply the brakes first, and then put the car into neutral.

Yes, the street Boss has the manual but the road racing Boss 302S has an automatic, according to Autoweek. Edit: it is SCCA and World Challenge GTS spec, not Grand Am.

All this is pointless to me. I don't watch Grand Am. ALMS is where it's at. :p

Maybe if they got rid of those hideous $h!t boxes in the other class...

Here's a picture of one just like what I picked up on Monday. It's a plane Jane GT base- not quite as clean looking as the Bullitt but close IMHO. :D

Very nice...AND you have that beautiful 5.0 engine. You know, I'm not sure, but if the 5.0 emblem on the fender is just glued on, a good detail man could remove 'em. Then folks might make the mistake of thinking you're one of those "mere" 305 horsepower 6 cylinder 2011's... ;)

Come across any M3's at a stoplight yet?

LOVE the color!

Excellent pics, now those are real Mustangs. Miss my 64 1/2 now.

Paul - I never even drove the car. It had 2 feet of snow on it when I made the deal. I never even fired it up. I'm excited but all the driving I will be doing is the 40 min. trip home on the first clear day we get next week. I wonder if it will have enough grunt. :)

Reg 12-09-2010 05:40 PM

....then it will sleep till spring.

If it's slippery at all, you'll have too much grunt...Peter Egan wrote a funny bit in the latest R&T about getting his Bullitt parked for the winter after it snowed...:D

Just slip a battery tender on, and your GT should sleep well.

On the last Mustang we bought, I told the sales droid he had a deal...oh just one more thing, please have the detail shop get out a heat gun and remove the big vinyl script down each side of the car. He looked at me like I was a six-headed alien, but he did it. 'Stangs, like so many other current models, do tend to overdo it on the bling.

pwd72s 12-09-2010 06:17 PM

I looked into removing the faux gas cap, but it would involve filling holes & a trunk repaint. The estimate I got was around $700...I decided I didn't look at the thing when I was driving.

But...many car makers, even Porsche, guilty of the "bling" thing these days...

Well, I guess they were in the old days, too...'73 RS was damned "bling-y" for it's time.

porsche4life 12-09-2010 06:25 PM

No bling, all zing!

My car is devoid of bling.....

pwd72s 12-09-2010 07:39 PM

Yea tho I travel through the valley of rice and other 4 bangers, I shall fear none....for I have four more cylinders and gobs more torque!

If I were to have a new Mustang, it would need to be one of 2011s. Probably a V6 since it is lighter and handles better. The new V6 is a much more elegant piece of engineering than the old lump. The new 5.0 in the GT is a step in the right direction for weight, sophistication, and power, however.

I would take a well set-up 944 over either, though.

kaisen 12-10-2010 06:00 AM

I recall seeing many 944s back in the day with PORSCHE center taillight inserts and PORSCHE vinyl sill graphics (and PORSCHE floormats, bra logo, windshield logo, etc).

I suppose everyone just confused them for Chrysler Conquest TSi's if they didn't spell it out.

The difference between a 2011 Mustang base V6 and a GT V8 is almost exactly 100 pounds. Only ~55lbs of that is the motor, the rest is spread out in stronger hardware. I'd gladly exchange 100 pounds of curb weight for 107 horsepower and 110 foot-pounds of torque.

Especially due to the 3.31 gears in the V6, versus 3.73 in the V8...think 'leverage'.

The V8 'handles better' in an objective way (numbers), and the carbon-plate limited slip in the V8 will handle track sessions longer than the organics in the V6.

You need to drive both I guess.

Those awful taillight things were dealer add ons. It say Porsche below it on the body and above it on the spoiler. :)

If a mustang comes with a 5.0, you have to buy that model. The V6 is for ladies. :)

Well stated...the new v-6 is no slouch with 305 horsepower, but the new 5.0? Man, it's somethin' else...has lots of forged internals, even "squirters", etc.

Engine wise, I bought too soon.

If I were ordering an '11 GT, I'd go base model, insisting only on the 3:73 limited slip and the Brembo brakes. 6 speed for the gearbox, of course.

On the other hand, I think the '09 body is more attractive than the current style...
a taste thing for sure.
