My dad has an inert frag grenade (no fuse, no charge) as a souvenir from WW2. I remember bringing it to school for 3rd grade show & tell in the early 60's.
Today, that would be called an "incident".

BEWARE ! the pull handels (fuse) are inter changable !!! Make sure you know (KNOW) what you have as it could be a 4 sec fuse..not a 8 sec fuse !!!!!!!
That might cause you some time problems
IN Nam we would change these out for differant aplications...................

I just gave away an inert MKII frag grenade this spring. Bough it at an Army Navy store in Jacksonville NC near camp LeJeune about 7 years ago. I think it was about $10.00.

I KNOW I will get flamed for this but, Ya'll may recall an encounter I had with BATF about a year ago over a tear gas baton that I found in my grandfathers possessions, and that I indeed did call them to make sure I was not breaking any laws by selling it on Gunbroker. I'm a gunsmith and had a LOT to lose by pissing BATF off. It was an illegal device and was informed by them that they would come and get it and dispose of it. I took a LOT of heat here for doing that. However my experience with the BATF special agent was a very positive experience. No jack booted guys jumped out of a black helicopter or nothing. Nobody threatened me or treated me like a criminal. Actually the agent was about my sons age, 30's, dressed like a normal person, no black suit and shades, and was courteous and respectful. If you have not taken possession of this device DO NOT and just go about your biz. If you have, GET RID OF IT. Just call BATF they will get it off your hands. If you are scared your experience will not be as good as mine, have a lawyer present, at the least have their phone number ready. You can tell your friend what you have found out here and let him make the choice of what to do, but if you do not have it in your possession, for God's sake don't go near it. You can see the tangled web it forms.

Best advice yet...

that"s what he said it looked like, I told him to send me a photo but I do not think he's going to.

If it looks like the grenade on the T-shirt, there are several problems with the info posted so far. The T-shirt depicts a Mk2 fragmentation grenade.

This is a Mk2 grenade:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...px-MkII_07.JPG

Mk2 grenades came with a M5, M6, M10 or M204 fuze. Never an M206 fuze.
But as mentioned, fuzes can be interchanged. This was a common practice on the M61 and later grenades, as different fuzes can make the grenade useful for different applications.

Fuze interchange was not common with the Mk2 because the Mk2 used granulated TNT. This caused a detonation hazard when trying to change out the fuzes. (This is also why Mk2 grenades are popular as paper weights - the granulated TNT can simply be poured out.)

Due to the conflicting information from your friend, and to the age of a Mk2 grenade (production ceased in the 60s), you should consider it unsafe to handle.

No pics?
There is always the chance your friend is just BS-ing you about even having one.

the authorities cant arrest the dead dad...i would just call the cops and say.."i was cleaning out my dad's crap and found this....".

screw messing around with the stuff. i know too little about military bombs to even pretend to know what i'm doing. growing up watching "a-team" doesnt make me qualified.

What makes you think it's a live grenade?

I have a couple like the picture above. They sell or at least used to sell them at army surplus stores.

I think the only way to know for sure is to pull the pin,
I have been a lucky guy doing stuff not very smart but I'm not pulling that pin!!!!

dhoward 01-24-2011 11:02 AM

Unscrew the fuse and pull the pin. A spring-loaded hammer strikes a primer, igniting the delay.

I assumed it was live since he was asking about the legality of owning one.
If it were an inert "dummy" grenade, there should be no question of legality.

Please don't hold it if you do this.
The M206 fuze has a detonator charge - like a light blasting cap charge.
It can cause a pretty good injury if you're holding it when it detonates.

What could possibly go wrong?

looks drilled on under side!!!!!

David 01-24-2011 04:22 PM

The lack of any paint or markings indicating a dummy would worry me too. I'm thinking you could just unscrew it but I know zero about real grenades. Don't we have some Nam vets here?
