there is simply no legal way to own something like that. it had to have been stolen from a national guard armory in the first place. and even simple possession is a felony.
my advice would be to chuck it in the swamp and never mention it again. telling the authorities will bring tons of unwanted attention. if the bomb squad guys are feeling nervous they might even decide to detonate it in place.

Chucking it in the swamp is the easy way to go but still reckless. It could show up again and kill somebody. Even though they could not connect the dots to you, it would still be blood on your hands.
I KNOW I will get flamed for this but, Ya'll may recall an encounter I had with BATF about a year ago over a tear gas baton that I found in my grandfathers possessions, and that I indeed did call them to make sure I was not breaking any laws by selling it on Gunbroker. I'm a gunsmith and had a LOT to lose by pissing BATF off. It was an illegal device and was informed by them that they would come and get it and dispose of it. I took a LOT of heat here for doing that. However my experience with the BATF special agent was a very positive experience. No jack booted guys jumped out of a black helicopter or nothing. Nobody threatened me or treated me like a criminal. Actually the agent was about my sons age, 30's, dressed like a normal person, no black suit and shades, and was courteous and respectful. If you have not taken possession of this device DO NOT and just go about your biz. If you have, GET RID OF IT. Just call BATF they will get it off your hands. If you are scared your experience will not be as good as mine, have a lawyer present, at the least have their phone number ready. You can tell your friend what you have found out here and let him make the choice of what to do, but if you do not have it in your possession, for God's sake don't go near it. You can see the tangled web it forms. Last edited by targa911S; 01-23-2011 at 11:12 AM.. |

Differing from your situation, your gas baton was at one time legal. This grenade was never legal. Somebody will be answering questions as to how it came into their possession. Nobody wants to try and do the right thing, only to see a friend or family member indicted. If he does decide to turn it in, I suggest having it handled by an attorney. Somebody has some choices to be made. With regard to the Orlando news story, it is a concussion grenade, not a frag. It has a lot less TNT than a frag. Though it can injure and maim in close proximity, it would not "rock a neighborhood" if it went off. Glad to see no charges were filed in that situation.

If someone see you detonating a grenade at a like, etc... it would have been much better to call the local police dept and explain what was found. Just make sure there isn't anything else around you wouldn't want them to see...

that would be a fragmentation grenade; a people-killer. no legit reason to have a live one at all.

When I was a Hospital Corpsman, stationed at Camp Pendleton, around 1986-88, I lived in a ratty house with a bunch of other guys in Oceanside, CA. I came home from work one day to see some kids playing with a USMC "ball style" grenade in the grass. I got them away from it, called the Oceanside PD and they arrived with a USMC EOD vehicle. They picked up the grenade, placed it in the vehicle, detonated it and left. No muss, no fuss. The EOD vehicle was so stout that I barely heard the grenade when it blew. I'm sure glad those kids didn't get hurt...

When I was in Jr High back in the early Reagan days we had a kid Nicknamed "Skinny" He was 6'2" and about 190#'s
Skinny almost always wore fatiques and a swamp hat. One day we had a substitute teacher. Skinny pulls out a drilled in the bottom Frag gernade out of a cargo pocket of his pants and starts playing with it! The Sub poos herself but demands the gernade. Skinny pulled the pin, squezed the spoon and handed it to her! She ran out of the classroom with it at arms lenght screaming all the way to the principals office. EOD wasn't called but we never did see Dale "Skinny" at school again! It was funny back then, but if my wife was the sub I wouldn't laugh at it today.
