Where I grew up (Monterey, CA) it was just like calling a white guy the "N" word...not a good thing...can you imagine white guys adopting the word as a "term of endearment" amongst one another like some of my fellow African American brethren have ? We would have blacks calling each other the "N" word and whites calling each other the "C" word, and getting mad when someone other than a white person used the word...

Yup, not a nice term (However I have a good bud that we call "Cracka'") He's not PWT "poor white trash"

Florida, too.
Florida cracker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think it's supposed to be like honkey, or the white version of the n-word. I had a woman call me cracker once while she was trying to shoplift from my auto parts store. It was weird, but didn't bother me in the least.

Glad to hear that from you Jtilden. I like to get along with the neighbors if possible, and this guy seems like a good guy. Was hoping I did not offend or cross some racial boundary that I was not aware of.

Word Association from NiNo

Won't embed.

Richard Pryor and Chevy Chase do some word association.

Love Richards facial expressions. Funny as ****.

Given the time period you only get away with it if it was Pryor or Foxx.

It's perfectly acceptable. I mean.... You are black, right?

Personally I just love when someone calls me Chief, Buddy or Guy. Especially someone I have some familiarity with. It just means they don't remember my name.

I think if he has a name that's what you should use. What bothers me more is when white guys think they're being cool by referring to black guys as brother, playa, homes, etc...

Trust me , I was not trying to be cool. I often call my good buddies brother. I was working and moving a bunch of stuff when I said it, and it just sort of came out of my mouth. I said it to him, just like I would say it to anybody else I know.
I'm just glad I did not call him soul brother, or home slice or something like that.

After all, you being an uppity Honkey Whitecracker, Porsche driving Peckerwood and all I'm sure there is a lot of empathy between the two of you.

That is, of course, unless he drives a Porsche. Then you may call him brother.

Goes without sayin.

I have a neighbor behind me, Dominican from NY, calls everyone Brother.

One down the street, Italian from Houston, calls everyone Brother.

One across the street, he's from Arkansas, he looks like Woody from Toy Story so that's what we call him.

He calls everyone Brother.

I'm the only one on the block that might be "offended".

Never gave it second thought till this thread.

Now I hate my friends.

Thanks for making my day.

It depends on the situation...group of guys working towards a common goal..Brothers, Bro's, Brah's.. on the street in a possible confrontation...probably not a good choice of words.

It's only offensive if he wants it to be.

I play golf several times a week here in Charlotte with a very diverse group of retired guys(white, black, Chinese), all from NY Metro, NJ, MI, NC or western NY (one lone straggler from WV), and a car dealer. A constant golf partner (black, from Bed-Stuy) calls me "little bro or little brother" (I'm shorter and younger than him), and all of us commonly do the fist bump or the handshake at the end of the round. I "hey bro" in return. A pretty light group, no politics or deep stuff, just golf. But we all get along well. Streaky golf, no champions except one really old dude that played as a pro many years ago (kicks our butts, scratch golfer at 80).
Maybe how you use the term depends on relationship, like everything else.

I think it's ok, as long as you give the little "black power" fist salute with it.

I don't see a problem with it. Although I don't ever call anyone "brother", a good friend of mine does repeatedly.

As for "cracka"...

Quote:
Cracka - A term slaves used to identify the slave driver with the whip, because of the sound the whip made.

"Ya'll betta' get back to work, the cracka be a comin'."
.. it's not really a term of endearment.
