14 years old. Working at a small airport after school and on weekends. Got flying lessons instead of money. Flew once or so a week in an old Cub with no sign of brakes.

In 1966 the end of my college freshman year me and a high school buddy were bored, so we drove from NY to LA (we had $67. between us), made it in 5 days. On the way we tried to get jobs as uranium miners in Lake Ambrosia, NM, but they wouldn't hire us (no habla). Got to CA and got jobs in Burbank in a machine shop. Bummed around LA. Stayed 2 months and headed back to NY to school via Mexico and Texas (nearly ended up in a Border Patrol jail in ElPaso). Ended up in SC at my aunt's house in Georgetown and mooched for a week, used her beach house on Pawleys Island. My parents saved us by wiring $ twice so we could eat and buy gas (remember Western Union, anyone?). Good summer as I recall, got schooled real well. Been traveling ever since.

11 years old, and enjoying the never ending summer at the NJ shore. My parents were teachers, and my dad (Industrial Arts teacher) designed and sub-contracted a house on Long Beach Island. We spent all summer at the shore from the late 50's to the early 70's. Great times.

It was nice to be blissfully unaware of what would lie ahead in real life.

Had recently gotten out of the Army & was working as a gantry crane operator for a steel company on the graveyard shift and selling Fuller Brush during the daytime. I was waiting to start college in September. Then I dropped the selling job during the day but kept the crane job at night. After all it paid a big $3.68/hr. Good money.

Just returned from living for 3 years in Mexico and at age 14 starting to chase girls in a big way. Friend of mine had just bought a 1957 356 that we were forever restoring.

You do not need brakes in a cub unless its to turn off the runway!
