I'd kill for that Jet City 100w head and a good cab basically an affordable soldano... still don't have that kind of cash laying around though. $650 for a good 100w tube head oh man anyway
What kind of music is he into? For a beginner I would go with a modeling amp, 15 watts is more than enough the main ones are the line 6 spider, peavey vypyr and the Roland cube. The fun thing about these amps is that they have a ton of effects built in which can give you a ton of different sounds and tones from one amp without buying extra pedals. Granted they don't sound as good as a tube amp but to anyone beneath the level of experienced guitarist you won't really notice a difference. I know when I first picked up the guitar at a young age I gave it up because it didn't sound like what I liked, all my amp had was a boring clean channel with some pretty spineless reverb/distortion. Maybe having the sound he can really fiddle around with will keep his interest. I've been playing for ~2 years on a 100w Vypyr and it's fine. I chose it over the spider which I thought just sounded terrible but I have no experience with the cube.
