Aye. We'll club them to death with sheep limbs. Now there's some irony.

ACTUALLY.... THEY ARE! It is called the Norman Conquest.

of course, the Normans were originally Vikings (or at least Norsemen) who settled down and got Frenchified

to complete the circle... the Vikings did the same thing in Scotland (esp. in the powerful Lords of the Isles... McDonald clan)

If I had to guess, I'd say it looks like it's the Black Watch tartan, or a close variant.

Realistically, the concept of tartan "entitlement" has long gone, and anyone can pretty well wear any tartan they want; no law or anything against it.

That being said, tradition dictates that only Scottish Military are entitled to wear the Black Watch tartan, as it's their traditional dress.

It's like the Balmoral tartan is meant to be worn by Royal Family members only, and yet anyone can buy all sorts of things made of it.

Just for ****s and giggles, here's a pic I took of cloth being woven in a mill at the top of the Royal Mile, just outside Edinburgh Castle.

For your first one, check out Welcome to Stillwater Kilts Good place to start for a good quality kilt at a lowish price. Too cheap and they do not last!

Find your family crest or where your family is from. There are many different tartans and some are rather hard to find. I've got three, need more occassions to wear them! They are comfy and the spoon fits nicely in the sporan.

It is a hunting MacLeod tartan (not a good picture), and Branson is a northern english name I believe, so one would need to question his claim.

What i am saying - if he can't put it on right side round he has no right to wear it!

Actually, the current royal family have German roots.

The Queen's Mother, was Scottish.

I used to wear a kilt to school every Monday for cadets - they were great, very comfortable and the girls just loved them.

Still wear one on a regular basis - I'm a piper in a band - and you do have to be careful when you choose to go commando/traditional. Never if it's a street parade with a crowd and lots of children. Also, you have to be careful if it's a wet day - people can get more than they expected in the reflection from puddles of water!

There is one school of thought that the tartan should come from your mothers line. In ancient Scotland they said that men had faith, women had knowledge - the men believed the children were theirs, the women knew they were theirs!
