Naw... he has been a grumpy old man since 8th grade... funny because he moved to Portland from Los Angeles a few years ago and now hypes the whole "keep Portland weird" thing.

Good thing is he introduced me to my wife... which has me thinking... kilt>wife>easy access

Holy cow, I hadn't expected 4 pages of comments in 24 hours!

My family is from a tiny clan that lived near the Isle of Skye. My father knows that his ancestors claimed the Black Watch tartan, but then, I get the idea that everyone did, so I don't know if my family's claims have any credence. Our battle cry is "For the field of two declivities!" Dorky, but ... that's family history for you.

I can't justify spending the $1K on a real kilt in the family tartan, not for a comfortable substitute for shorts on a summer day. I'm thinking that $200 for a utilikilt is also pretty pricey, but is there a better value in something that's reasonably comfortable, will wear ok commando or not, and won't wear out in a single afternoon?

The fact that ladies dig man-legs is a huge bonus. I run a LOT, so my legs are really quite nice, if I do say so myself. I hate being a normal person, just like everyone else -- just another jeans-wearing boring person, you know? So maybe a kilt is a good answer.

Thanks for all the responses.

Dan

Sure I wear a Kilt. Have for over 45 years. Yes, you go commando. No, there's nothing worn under there, it's all in perfect working condition.

There are few outer garments that can go from mucking out a barn to meeting the Queen and be perfectly acceptable. But a Kilt can.

You can order them in different weight wool. The best grade are quite heavy and extremely durable. They are often passed down to sons. They are comfortable.

Although tartans are made in a wide variety, there is no historical connection between a tartan and a particular clan. That nonsense was made up during Queen Victoria's time, and the lie stuck.

I often wear my kilt to hunt in and for formal functions including business meetings. Only in America are men so insecure to make fun of it. And after a double entendre reply about their interest, they are so embarrassed they just try to hide. It is great fun.

I got mine from 8 Yard Traditional Tartan Kilts by Scotweb Kilts & Tartan Store in my family tartan and it was around $400. More than $200 but a lot less than $1000. You can spend a bunch on other things to go along with the kilt of course, but even so, I wouldn't think it would add up to that much more unless you were getting a custom tailored jacket with the outfit.

On a side note...

Wool & going commando... wouldn't that be a little itchy?

And my family war cry is "separate tabs please!" I did mention we are of English heritage.

High quality wool isn't that itchy. I've never had an issue when wearing mine.

Now wouldn't it be an interresting turn of events if the WOMEN on this site posted pics that got us banned/threads locked? Usually we just sit back and watch the guys engulf themselves in flame - but no longer! You GO girl!

My mother's family is Scottish, amongst a few other things, and I went to a Scottish festival in Asheville, North Carolina a few years ago. I wore a kilt for the first time; I really didn't care for it, frankly.

--I wasn't wearing any underwear!--

Putting on the skirt and purse for a night out takes on a new meaning!

At school we had long hairy sporans (the purse hanging in front) and used to scare the girls on the train by wearing them under the kilt with just the bottom edge showing below the hem line.

Great conversation starter when you are 15 or 16.

I've worn one - a rented one at a formal dinner evening in Scotland. I found it to be very comfortable and something I would do again. But while some guys do go "military," as it's called, I wouldn't do that on a bet.

As for owning one - well, no. I do have a tie in the family tartan, however.
