Sign of the Economy? Barrett Jackson = "Al's Used Car Lot"?

This was the best cars they could get on their "Big Day" Sunday in California???

Orange County 2011 Car Docket List | Barrett-Jackson Auction Company

That list reads like the AutoTrader. $7K 1983 Mercedes 380SL's, $6K Dodge pickup trucks, etc.

Why would an owner bother to auction a $6K pickup? Did he expect to get VW van prices or something?

What does this mean?
"A rare 1958 Apache 1/2 ton short bed, this classic collector boasts the pride of ownership. This very unique vintage classic is extremely reliable and dependable. **TITLE IN TRANSIT** **NOT EMISSIONS COMPLIANT, CAN ONLY BE SOLD TO DEALER OR OUT-OF-STATE-BUYER**

Emissions regulations on a 60 year old truck? You can't even OWN a non-compliant vehicle??

You are right about the (?) cars but in fairness there were some collectible and cool cars further down the list. I would love to own the '66 Pontiac GP, that particular car is just one of my favorites. Awesome interior. I wonder what it went for? Is there a "results" page somewhere?

Yeah, that one made no sense at all.

One thing for sure a 60 year old truck would have 100% of the emission control parts that came from the factory. I bet the ABS and traction control works just like it did in 1958.

I'm just surprised at how many very average sub-10K daily driver, completely non-collectible cars there were, esp. for a Sunday.

5 years ago, there's no way your $6K 1996 Dodge pickup truck was going to be auctioned on Sunday at BJ, maybe not even on Friday or Saturday.

Now, yes, there were some nice cars, but it seemed like 75% was stuff right out of your local AutoTrader.

The results are on the page that I linked. You just need to click on each "Lot Number" to get the sale price.

I looked at that '66 Pontiac GP and I like how they say all orginial, and then it has an Eddlebrock air cleaner and valve covers.

What I can't belive is the blue '65 Mustang 6 cyl that went for $23,500......

I believe one other factor that has affected BJ is the number of other auctions that have sprung up and are doing well, such as Mecuum Auto auction. Mecuum never had the image of the high dollar cars like BJ, used to. Maybe trying to appeal to the masses instead of the elite is the plan??

They play fast a loose with the terms "rare," "restored," and "original." A '67 Chevy C 10 rare? I don't think so. A '41 Chevy " restored" with a 235, dual Strombergs, and a Fenton manifold? C'mon.

At BJ Saturday has always been the big day with Saturday night bringing the most expensive cars.
Sunday has always been the cars that were just a little nicer than the Thursday cars.

Let's face it, BJ has over-saturated an already depressed market.

They have the scottsdale auction, they have the Florida auction, they have the Palm Springs auction, they have the Las Vegas auction and they added the OC auction.

We already have pebble beach, we already have R&M, the last thing we needed with the economy in the toilet was another california auction for specialty cars.

The really nice cars are tucked away in a warm cozy garage waiting for better days.
Imagine you own a really nice expensive collector car that was worth $100k 3 years ago and now cars just like it are selling for $20k and that price falls further at every auction they hold.
You'd prolly kick yourself in the arse for missing the market, then accept the fact that you're going to have to sit on the car for a long time.

That is unless you were irresponsible and needed to dump your car right now, no matter what.
Suppose you were one of those tools who cashed out every bit of equity in their house when the price was sky high. I know you aren't but just imagine you were for the sake of this discussion.
Then you became an even bigger tool because you didn't feel like making a house payment for the past 18 months, hoping the bank would cut your mortgage in half.

So now the bank has forclosed, you have a notice to vacate, and all you really have anymore is a big stack of bills, a deep feeling of shame and guilt, and your beloved collector car which you must now sell or live in it. Either way.

You need to dump it fast and the buyers know it.
They also know it could continue to drop in valve for several more years so they won't offer squat for it.
Everyone can see that except the jokers at BJ who have watched their crazy cash cow dry up and are afraid to admint those days are gone forever.
So they decide to try and make it up in volume.
They're like the owners of a video movie rental store who can't figure out why they don't have any customers anymore.
The days of charging through the nose just for THE PRIVILAGE of buying or selling a car at one of their auctions will soon be gone. What are they charging, 8-1/2% from the seller and 2-1/2% from the buyer or something like that plus bidding fees etc? Just to use their tent?

Every vehicle bought and sold in California has to legally comply with emmisions standards.
If it's old enough you don't have to have it tested but legally you still have to comply.
I'm betting that BJ's lawyers got all california'd up and said that is a vehicle doesn't have current registration and smog cetificate it doesn't comply with emmissions just to cover their butts to keep from getting sued.

We gots lots O'lawyers here.

Really, A 86 CJ-7 rebuilt on a SALVAGE title, an 89 T/A and a 03 F-250 with a 10"lift (badged as a F-550). That is worth the price of admission alone.

Al's used Car Lot is right. They used to turn away 50K and 60K cars in their hay day.
