Dean Polopolus originally built these engines as a high performance, "bolt-in" engine for the 356 chassis.
IIRC the first engine was installed in Gary Emory's wide bodied 356 vintage racer "El Diablo" that was quite often piloted by Milt Minter.

So they're a "relatively affordable" alternative to the Carrera 4 cam engine.

Well, not as cool as most of the engines posted, but...

Miata engine

http://www.racingmazda.com/images/engine_miata_bp_b.jpg

this is also a miata, but not exactly a miata engine... (sort of like a modern day cobra)

Certainly not your standard Miata engine. Very cool!

Relatively affordable? They cost $25k+ so compared to the $32K I charged for the last 4 cam engine I overhauled, I guess more cost effective would be an accurate statement.

Great looking project. I hope the builder plans to replace that sump screen with the later venturi style screen.

Henry, was $32K for rebuilding a good soild worn engine or was that to fix a failure? Our Cessna 206 engines are about that much and they are very simple low RPM engines.

daepp 08-23-2011 08:53 AM

Wow, Henry, I didn't know you did 4 Cams. I am even more impressed!

Here's a supposed Italian 4 Cam that may or may not have inspired Fuhrmann:

That last one - is that a '64?

Anyone know why they abandoned that (cam driven?) fuel pump?

You guys don't mind if a chick joins the engine porn thread - right? ;)

This is the 3.2 in our replica 550 spyder. It runs like a cat with a hot sake enema.
