![]() The venerable Meyer Drake Offenhauser engine with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder was the hot setup in champ car racing for over 40 years. The block and head are all a one piece casting, no head gasket to blow. No other engine was successful for so long a period. It's a thing of beauty.

![]() Packard DR-980 9 cylinder radial Diesel engine. Only about 100 were ever built, but they were eventually certified airworthy.....in 1930! This engine produced 225 horsepower continuously at 1,950 RPM. The usual Diesel challenges of vibration and strong exhaust smell caused many pilots to dislike them, but the design still proved to be reliable and very economical to operate. A DR-980 set an 84 1/2 hour endurance record for flight on one tank of fuel in 1931. This record would go on to stand for 55 years..

![]() Here's an engine rarely seen since they were only ever designed and intended to be disposable. This is the 4 cylinder radial engine from a WWII German G7A torpedo. It ran on Decaline fuel (decahydronaphthalene), which was first burned. The combustion byproducts were then passed through a device called a 'wet heater', which also introduced water (from a 57L onboard storage tank) to produce superheated steam. This high pressure mixture of superheated steam and compressed air was finally sent through the engine to drive the pistons. Since the internal combustion/steam generator system was self-contained and fueled by a chemical reaction instead of ambient air, it could run underwater. The 4 cylinder, 'X' type radial engine produced up to 350 horsepower at its maximum power setting, which was enough to push the 26',6" torpedo (the length of a large Uhaul moving van for comparison purposes) along at nearly 50mph while submerged.

![]() When you needed a new Ford flathead engine back in the day, Sears kept Allstate rebuilt motors in stock. You would pull in, and they would swap out your old engine for a new one. This was also done by Ford dealers and Western Auto. As well as a number of other lesser known companies. Which furthers the chances, you do not have the original motor. Because back then, no one cared until the 60s. They just wanted to get back on the road. This reduced rebuild time from a few weeks, down to a few days or less.

Sears and Roebuck was an amazing company.
Engines, rifles, house kits. Pretty sad, the Sears store near me closed its doors and now I can’t exchange broken tools easily. Quote:

Something I recently bolted together in my garage. Getting ready to break it in, probably Monday, once the plates are renewed.
