The tires were rotating fast enough to maintain shape, throttle open or not. I don't understand the pic though. How can a bell housing leave the motor w/o the whole shebang falling out of the chassis?

Most top fuel and funny cars were running direct drive (no transmission) back then. Since there was no tranny mount, motors were supported front and rear. They still are, even though they now run a two speed tranny. Here is the rear mount (the big plate between bell housing and engine block):
