The Honda Experiment

I am not going to get into a long back story, but this summer I managed to acquire a 1991 Honda Prelude 4WS. It is a pretty cool car, but this one is now mine and I am not really a Honda guy. I put it up for sale for what I had into it, but it just didn't seem to move because the body is a little dinged up.

Even though the motor is rebuilt and the interior is in very good condition. If it only had some fresh paint I could move this thing right? Well I am about to find out. So far I have $12 into this paint job and it is going to Maaco later this week. Total I am going to have around $500 (and 2 weekends) into painting it. What I want out of the car is going up $1500. I also have a new exhaust sitting in a box for it. It will be a very nice car when I am done.

So my question is, do I paint it red again? Which is what I am leaning towards or do I change the color to attract more buyers. NSX blue or black are the colors I am considering. Thoughts?

Here is the blue I was thinking about.

I would opt for the red for myself, but the blue will attract the younger Honda crowd. That sure makes me miss my '92 Accord EX. That car was the best running car, I regret selling that one.

If you paint it blue, the red engine compartment would be pretty jarring... like a pair of old 3D movie glasses!

Besides, there's a reason salespeople refer to the original colour as "resale red". People love red cars.

I agree, that Red is the best choice for a lot of reasons. It is a fairly rare car and keeping it the original color makes sense. However the kids looking at this thing don't care about originality. First thing they are going to do is slam it, put new wheels on it and probably put an ebay turbo on it. So blue fits with that theme.

I wish I liked the car more, it is very clean and fun to drive. What would I use it for? The 4WS are supposed to make great autocross cars ;-)

Thanks guys I am just going to go with the original color. It is temping to change it, but I know it will just not be right. The car gods will smite me at some point for it.

Sell it in prime. Tell the buyer there are 2 prices, painted or as it sits. Their choice of color. Fancy colors and stripes extra. You won't lose a buyer due to wrong color.

True enough, black primer would do well. Same scenario. BTW, red looks good when painted over black.

I was considering (for a brief moment) getting some black primer mixed and then shooting a top coat of black. It would be cool for someone to purchase it either as a ratrod or finished car. Hmmmm, something to consider. As for the wheels I am am going to hit them with a high speed scotchbright wheel and just make them shiny. All things look better shiny.

Keep the ideas coming. :-)

Red. I've always liked older Preludes... kind of sucks that it'll probably have a blown engine or be wrapped around a tree within 6 months of being sold.

Wow I was blocking out the car last night and I think I could do 3 Preludes to every one 911. Everything on that car is straight, it is easy. When I was finishing the 911 I was going crazy with all the curves. I also talked to the guys who are going to paint it and they also talked me out of changing colors. Red it is for sure. I will take some pictures before and after paint.

I really hope someone buys this car who appreciates it as a classic and not as another ricer mobile. However I doubt that will happen :-(

Honda's red is called San Marino Red and is a very nice choice. This is mine with added side rocker covers.
