On 16 January 2012 Jeb suffered multiple leg fractures in an accident while BASE jumping off Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa. He appeared to strike with his feet, probably pulling up to make the edge, spinning 30 meters out before deploying his chute. He was airlifted out by the Red Cross Air Mercy Service Augusta 119"

Looks like a lot of fun but a bit dangerous. I read that 1 out of 6 in this sport don't make it. I would prefer something motorized like a fast airplane and just take it over the mountain range instead. You can go up in that if you realize you are getting too close ...

As Marco Simoncelli said, "I live more in 5 minutes than most people live in a lifetime."

If I didn't have responsibilities, I'd be doing that in a heartbeat!

So the helmet is pretty much just there to serve as a camera mount...

Correct.

I have jumped with him but its been years ago when he was still refining his wing-suit. He is a really nice guy and not wacko at all, just likes to push the limits.

Yeah they call it "proxy" flying. As in close "proximity" to the walls/outcroppings/etc. You know, because you have to have something to do when skydiving isn't enough, then BASE jumping isn't enough, and then BASE jumping with a wing-suit just doesn't cut it.

Pretty much. You can see it tumble off (along with his GoPro) in that vid. Basically, a helmet is little more than a camera (and audible altimeter) mount, but can serve as protection while under canopy (wall strikes, etc.) and/or during a bad landing. With "normal" skydiving, they offer a fair degree of protection if you collide with fellow skydivers in freefall as well. The ones that cover the ear are great for wind-noise reduction too.

Yea I would book some wing jumping lessons if my days were numbered.
That's a bong hit of adrenalin for sure.

This guy was extremely lucky to survive. A little lower and they would be cleaning him off that rock with a sponge.

Yep. Speaking of which, Jeb was there when his buddy (fatally) smacked a bridge with a wing suit some years back. Google "Dwain Weston" and you might be able to find an "unedited" video of it out there in cyberspace. I haven't seen it in many years, but can still recall the gunshot-like "crack" sound when he hit. Yikes.
