I think parts for my BMW are more expensive than the 911 stuff. But when I took my 911 in for a valve adjust and oil change I said something about the high price, the guy told me I should have bought a chevy. I never went back there.

Keep in mind that buying from the Dealer gets you basically free shipping and a warranty that is usually twice as good as an OEM or sub OEM manufacturer. First, we should limit the discussion to commodity parts. Of course a Porsche badge wil be more than a Honda plastic badge. 1- they aren't the same part, and 2, Honda makes 100 times as many. I get why Porsche, (or Audi, etc) parts are more expensive in many cases...
'But, lets be real here. A Bosch alternator that is the same part/performance as the VW equivalent can be far more expensive when sold thru 'higher end' channels, such as an Audi or Porsche dealer.
And when it comes to the mundane things like Bosch sensors for water temp, pressure, etc, it's laughable that the same part costs SIX times more at the higher end dealer.

When I go to a great resturaunt, I 'get' why the same bottle of wine costs me 4 times (or more) what it would if I were to select it at my local wine store. I'm paying to be served, the ambiance of the location, etc.

But I get a guy tossing the part over the counter at the dealership and he's usually annoyed to trouble himself to do it.

When I can sit at my desk, order the same part at midnight, in my bathrobe, and have it shipped overnight for LESS money than it costs at the dealer, somethings not right.

Reminds me of when I drove a 944. Went to replace the CV joints, wanted a set of bolts in case the old ones got chewed up coming out.

Figured out that the 3 part #'s in PET were the VW, Audi and Porsche part bin #'s for the same bolt - 3 different prices. Think the VW bolt was $1.25, the Audi over $2 and the Porsche part over $3 each... Adds up when you want 24 of them...

Amusingly enough, the VW/Audi dealer was very pleasant when I parked the 944 on their forecourt and asked for the parts dept on my way to do the work - confirmed they stocked both the VW and the Audi part. Parts guy just smiled when I asked if he just had the one bin and rang it up differently...

Good "German" parts? Not all "genuine Porsche" replacement parts are made in Germany...distributor rotors & coils come immediately to mind, but I'm sure there are many others...Bosch farms out lots of work to other countries these days.
