Firing up the forge!

Heat treating the knives today. One of which will be donated to the Memorial Giveaway this year honoring Lisa_Spyder and proceeds going to the Shriner Childrens's hospital (If you haven't donated yet please see the sticky at the top of PPOT!)

Getting the fire going! (Notice the magnet on the right side of my homemade brake drum forge)

Getting the blade bright orange and non magnetic

Almost there...

Quenching the blade in 130 degree oil

So cool! What is the magnet doing? Also, how did you choose the oil/temperature? Do some people just dump it into cool water?

I would try it, but every time I fire up the forge the chihuahua's run and hide!

I am using 5160 steel. 5160 needs to be heated to the point where it is no longer magnetic. I use the magnet to check for this. Once it is hot enough to be non magnetic I quench in 130 degree oil. 5160 is considered an alloy of sorts and needs to be quenched in heated oil. 1095, 1085 etc... can be quenched in water. The recommended quenching temps for 5160 is 130 degrees to 160 degrees. I start on the low end because I am doing a run of knives and each knife I quench will raise the temperature of the oil a little.

Not much meat on them so guess its not worth it... I mean, their ribs are even scrawney!

Yeah, I really should wear pants/boots. I really want to build me a propane forge here pretty quickly. We are still in a drought and I am having to forge indoors. Even with the high winds today I just get smoked out. Likewise this forge likes to blow the small coals up in the air if I hit them with the knife. I caught a few that went into my gloves today. Won't have these issues with a propane forge.

If and when I get a propane forge going, I will probably offer this forge up on the pay it forward thread since I never travel with a forge or participate in hammer ins....

Lol that is true! Well gotta get back out there and start working again! Take care... Will update photos of the knife as it comes along...

Metal work with out protection is risky. Don't ask !, they make stupid tatoos. I have couple.
