the bass porn continues
Somehow I ended up with four new basses on order and as luck would have it, they all are getting done right around the same time. I previously posted the new 5-string fretless Skjold. The fretted sister got delayed, but #2 of the 4 is finished and ready for public consumption. This will be a show bass at NAMM, and I bring her home Sunday at the end of the show. My other Fodera will be up for sale to try and slow the budget hemorrhage.
Ebony and pau amarillo over a chambered walnut body. Maple neck, ebony fingerboard. Pretty much one of my "dream basses." There is no greater 4-string for me so I'm done on that count. Well, except for a backup ![]() ![]() ![]()

Dang Todd, I am no bass player, but you have really added some beautiful instruments to your collection this year.

Gorgeous. On the olden days, they used to make stuff out of walnut. Furniture and whatnot. Walnut is about as pretty as wood gets.

Fodera pulled out the stops as it will be on display at the show, but all of their instruments are sick. They are totally old school - no CNC. The necks are hand carved with small carving knives. The Yin Yang Deluxe requires a ton of work to hand fit the top. And the tone of the EMGs with the Pope custom shop preamp is to die for. Sadly they are announcing a new 5-string model at the show that I think is exactly what I was pondering ordering so I may be in trouble yet again. It won't be nearly as fancy or expensive though...
You only live once. And gawd knows I use the crap out of my basses. This one will be my main fretted instrument and be on pretty much every gig I do except for some of the straight jazz hits. Here's a shot showing the walnut body:

These girls don't deserve a thread of their own. They're here for the guys who prefer porn that is 'trashy' (cheap). The brunette Fender cost me $275 and the redhead Squier cost me a whopping $140. I currently prefer the redhead. She's got round-wounds, so she has a brighter, more piano-type tone. Plus....I've never played a maple neck before, and I like it.

![]() (for those that don't know, that is an official designation and is not a term of derision). Roger Sadowsky claims that the fingerboard material is probably the most important wood in terms of affecting tone. If you run the same type of round wounds on both basses you should get an idea of which you might prefer (some people like both or don't care) as the electronics are similar. I'm decidedly not a maple fingerboard guy, but I'm also not a Jazz Bass kind of guy either. I'm a bit of an outlier on that. For whatever reason I am drawn more to the P-bass body shape. Do you have flats on the black one? Seems like flats on that and rounds on the natural would be a good 1-2 punch. |

Yes, I do have flats on the black one. Was thinking of changing, but I will ponder that. Flats do have added punch.
I'm not offended by your vicious disparaging of Jazz basses but I hafta say, that last picture.....is that a sperm whale?

Does a vintage early 80's Yamaha BB1200S qualify as "Bass Porn"? If so, I can post a few pix of mine.
Let me know.
