I'm a francophile. Bistro food, Burgundy wines, a three-hour lunch. People that have made the quality of their daily lives a national sport.

Really? Not doubting you but I've had a different experience for the most part in Paris. Lots of cool, talkative cab drivers who knew where they were going and seemed reasonably happy with their jobs.

This here is the truth. ^^

Yes! If it's a 2CV. I can't imagine wanting to drive fast through the French countryside - well, maybe if you've been there a while and you've tired of it. But thrashing a 2CV along would be fun and you'd still get to experience the countryside.

Are we talking about the Cheese eating surrender monkeys or the people who believe Jerry Lewis is the pinnacle of comedic genius?

eeh, the pinnacle of comic genius is Louis de Funes

All the translation you need, is that the sketch involves a Maitre D in a Restaurant , who explains a recipe to a German guest. the rest is self explanatory

We would only take cabs with Black Cab Drivers. We had two run in's with the white guys. Our London Cab Drivers (who I think are the greatest) told us that the African Drivers were very friendly and they were right. Funny how people can be, how we experience the world. Some of the folks we met in Paris left permanent great memories for me. I would go back to Paris in a heart beat.

Amen. Seconded perhaps only by punting an Alfa through regional Italy. Champagne, June last year. I tried to hire the Megane RS250 hotrod, but this was as close as I could get.

Vive Le France.

Thats exactly right.

And the enduring mystery....full fat everything, wine, butter, cream, bakery, duck fat- and yet as a population, they are not overweight.

I am actually in the preliminary planning stages for our next vacation. Morocco with a Paris sandwich. If I plan it right that will mean 4 - 5 days in Paris (our favorite city). Not until next year however, as the travel budget must recover from our jaunt in 2011.

actually, France has been caving to the trend of junk food lately, and obesity is in fact on the rise. Just last week they instated a tax on soda pop drinks... all of them, including diet stuff.

Thats true, McCulture is insidious, and France has the problem too.

By dent of sheer convenience and the need of a wifi connection, we stopped at a French McDonalds last year. My Big Mac meal came with a beer and a salad, and the Big Mac itself was quite different to any Ive had anywhere else in the world. No sugary bread, no sweet mayonaise. Mustards, good bread and excellent meat. (Prolly horse). It was actually a really good hamburger.

One couple I know described the first time that they took their 3 kids to McD's at the Paris Disney. As she tells it, they begged her not to ever take them again . . .

Loved Paris, disliked the Parisians immensely. Spent some time in Le Havre, Rennes St Jacques and near Mayenne, loved all of it.
