New lenses have been fitted in my frames. They seem to have solved the problem, though I'll have to see about it through a workday tomorrow.

Can the old lenses be tinted dark and fitted in another set of frames to make sunglasses? They worked fine at distance, and I wouldn't often read or use a computer with sunglasses on.

since Lenscrafters has a lab inside, they should have a tinting machine and can do it. Not sure how much they'd charge, though.

It's a good idea. Usually tinting an old pair costs a fraction of what new sunglasses would cost. If lenscrafters quotes high, shop around.

Turns out they can tint hi-index but not polycarbonate, they cannot tint anti glare coatings but those can be stripped off first. So for about $60 I'm getting the "old" lenses tinted G15 which is the black-green Rayban shade, often seen with aviator frames. "They" is the little independent optician near my office, since I didn't want to go to LensCrafters for this. Now, RayBan is owned by Luxotica which also owns LensCrafters, so the little place can't order RayBans - grrrr. Well, new RayBan "New Wayfarers" are widely available on eBay, for less than LensCrafters charges. So I've ordered a tortoiseshell pair which may look kind of feline with the black-green lens, but still $160 for a set of progressive prescription sunglasses is not bad. Takes some of the sting out of the rapacious price of the initial set.

By the way, during my sunglasses shopping, I've found my new favorite sunglasses, along with Vuarnet of course. PERSOL brand. Very cool.
