Ten Worst States To Retire In

WHAT CA is NOT EVEN in the top 10...Ohhh I get it now....the NE erg New England has the bulk of the BAD BAD states to live in....all those Liberal Utopian Social Democracies are TOOOO EXPENSIVE for the old folks to live in...

The other cluster is in the midwest rust belt..of Ill, WI & MN...post industrial states where the UNIONS have created a paradise for workers...only the retired WORKERS can't afford to live there....

OHHHHH WELLL..for those retirees they can just say FK IT I am moving to Florida..land of SUN SHINE and LOW TAXES...ADIOS to TAXES and SNOW...

I don't know by what measures many of youse BOYZ would consider this state of affairs..But if the State promises one a better place to live through Liberal policies and the people who have lived, worked and have now retired CAN'T even afford to live in the place where they spent their lives . It has to be considered to be a FAILED MODEL..of economics and government.

I see P-O-P's New Hampshire wasn't included in the mass of New England states listed.

"Retire" doesn't mean what it used to mean.
Most people save money for retirement in 401ks and/or have annuities, pensions etc.
Drawing money out of accounts like that can be considered income in many instances. Paying taxes on retirement savings can be a really, really big deal.
My parents are retired but they pay quite a bit in taxes every year.
They bank more money than they spend so it doesn't hurt them that bad but still ...

Income taxes are an important consideration, as are property taxes, personal property taxes, sales taxes, etc. Also, the cost of housing and food, availability & cost of transportation when you're too old to drive. Don't forget to consider the weather, need for and cost of heating & cooling. The availability, accessibility, and quality of medical care are important. Lots of things to think about when you're thinking about where to retire.

"Retire" doesn't mean what it used to mean.
Access to medical care used to be a large factor for these rankings, and Minnesota kicked azz.
Now that's it's financial and political, I guess we're all going to die rich, sooner

Minnesota does have an odd mix of really brutal weather for elderly people but probably the best medical care available on the planet. While this particular winter is very mild, both factors are impacting my parents' health right now. My Dad is alive because of the extraordinary health care and my Mom and stepfather are suffering from the inferior medical care in NM, where their winter house is. But the weather is warm.

Ironically, my Mom is healing from a bad fall in NM on dry ground. Just one of those things.

you pay income tax on your 401k/traditional IRA accounts as you draw on them during retirement. Remember, they were funded with pre-tax dollars.

Our neighborhood in Charlotte is loaded with refugees from NJ, metro NY, Mass, Ohio and Michigan. Not so many from CT or the little New England states. There are so many here from Western NY there are 3 Buffalo Bills bars in town, and several catering to Giants and Jets fans. Yes, Charlotte has better winter weather than the North, but the main reason folks are retired here taxes. The tax structure in NJ, NY, etc is such that if you are on a basically fixed income (read retired), staying in those states is a tough grind. The property taxes are brutal on any side of NYC. Total yearly property taxes in CLT are commonly under $2,000 and South Carolina is even less. There are so many Yankees in and around Charlotte it is almost comical. You hear conversations in stores around here and you might think you're in NJ or Queens.

Twas the reason we left Shreveport when I retired from the USAF. Lousiana raced Mississippi and Alabama to the top of all the bad lists and the bottom of all the good lists. Many times, it won.

Then again, we visited some friends in Bossier City just before New Years and we all missed it badly. Big influx of ca$h from the Haynesville Shale deposit will boost that area for a number of years to come.

When I was a kid, we had to travel to Texass to see what a paved road looked like.

The rant from the first poster is over the top. The article never mentioned politics, but poster boy feels it's his duty to point out the 'real' reasons. Ugh.

Just now looked at the article... the first comment was from an Illinois resident...

scooby321
Last year in Illinois, our state income tax nearly doubled. Now the tollway costs nearly doubled. Our paychecks can't keep up. It's ridiculous!

Some of the replies...

Lou guess who is your governor.........an Obama dropout or excapee from DC....wait till Jan 2013 you will have the #$%$ in-chief back.

Kevin If you stay here in Illinois, you won't have to worry about retirement...just keep on working and paying your taxes...and keep on voting the Lib_tards into office while you're at it...see how that's all working for you? I'm out just as soon as I do retire...ADIOS!

Oldbird49 Gov workers and teachers unions must be eliminated or this will continue

John L Didn't Mayor Daly sell out and contract the toll bridges to some company for $1 billion to pay off the State's debt. What a guy! I've always heard alot of payoff's went around for everything...it makes NY look honest...Been there!

NeoCon Remember Quinns doubled income tax is temporary - HAHAHAHAHAHA

x10 Give an inch, they take a mile. Speeding cameras in school zones will be speeding cameras everywhere. Tolls on the highways just until the highway is paid for? Now they're a permanent fixture that's double twice in 10 years. Taxes and fees only go up, they are never ever temporary.

squirrellygirl X10 you are correct. They always say the taxes are just until this or that, and then somehow the taxes never go away, they only go up to pay for their eccentricities, spending out of control, political drivers. That's why we need a smaller government that is easier to keep in check. The bigger the government, the less you have of your rights, the less you get to spend your own money, and the government just loves "redistributing" your "wealth". I'm a poor girl who hates what our country is turning into. We are indeed beginning to look like Greece, riots and all. If this President Obama and his cronies aren't socialists, I would like you to tell me who is. Seriously.
