Sometimes when these things happen it's a good time to take a vacation or just some time off......do somethings you couldn't do while working full time. I know it's hard to think of doing something positive when your career takes a hit but in reality everyone goes through this so you just have to keep it all in perspective in my humble opinion.

Looks like First Data's quarterly revenue is $2.7BN. The company's operating margin is less than 8% and with the high interest expense, it lost money. $23BN of debt, not a good thing. Thanks to the financial wizards of private equity.

My wife broke her leg in August...nasty break involving the knee joint that took til now to get completely healed enough for her to do her physically demanding job. Boss/owner never called to see how she was doing. Now, ready to go back to work, boss cut her hours in half, saying "everyone has to cut back a little".. I got pissed and called her on it..the boss...saying 50% is NOT 'a little'. I despise that beotch. Now my wife is looking for another gig after having been a loyal employee for 16 years.... Sucks

Thanks guys. My wife is maddernahornet right now. She's an emotional being so it's going to hurt for a while.

She's already got offers for letters of recommendation from the guy they let go with her and her old boss who retired a few years ago. She hired my wife right out of college.

When I was laid off I knew it was coming for 2 weeks as I had to introduce the new owners to my existing accounts.
It wasn't any easier but we were able to prepare some things before the end.

Mark-that REALLY sucks that your wife's boss did that. I hope everything works out for you guys as well.

When I hear about working for the man I'm glad I never did. I might have been one of the guys you read about that went back with a vengeance.

Being outside the cubicle for life, I see all bosses as the pointy haired idiot in Dilbert.

If you're a boss reading this, don't wear 2 dicks on your head and be cool.

I am working towards this. Just another 2 months until I finish my 6 year journey, and a few more years experience learning the legal an marketing/distribution side of things. Then I'm starting my own firm.

What do you do? How did you get to be your own boss?
Do you ever get stressed out about being able to make ends meet, health insurance, that kind of stuff?

Are you kidding? I'm a contractor. That should tell you everything. And these days contractors are ranked just below used car salesmen. Back in the day I used to own Porsches and things like that.

I'm new here.
Building contractor, I take it? I don't know the lingo.

You're not making owning your own business sound very attractive! Unless you upgraded from Porsche to Ferrari or something like that...

I have no idea what contractors do. I know what used car salesmen do.

what was the company's interest expense prior to being taken over?

Is the equity firm allocating interest expenses to this unit to make other units look more profitable?

I was faced with this once. I told new owners to GFY and split with my relationships intact knowing that I was facing the axe anyway.

I would have loved to do that but the new owners hired me..........

then laid me off 3 months later. It was a huuuuuge relief that time. I absofarkinlutely hated the industry at that point.

I went about a month unemployed and then was hired by my current employer in a completely different industry.

Wayne, Sorry to hear and best of luck to your wife. I know how you guys feel. Everyone in my company was just told to take a mandatory week of "vacation" this week. Outlook does not look good.

What do contractors do?

They're out hustling the next job to pay for the previous job. Just like paying one credit card with another.

Wife got a call from the HR director this morning. She can't get into the payroll program and could wifey give her some help.......

As much as I would have loved to have my wife tell her the password was "F$^# Y*&!!!!!!!", she didn't."

The high road isn't always fun but it IS the right thing to do.

Not hardly. I think they were so excited to make the cuts that they forgot that she is the one that did all of the payroll/insurance/worker's comp./safety things.

My reply would have been along these lines:

"My hourly rate is $250 plus expenses with a four hr. minimum. I'll fax my contract right over. Thanks!"
