If you check the records, you will find a long and successful SCCA career so your question should really be "how many seconds does it SAVE." But, apparently you aren't interested in winning, or being comfortable. So go back to trying to wedge your corn-fed, mid-western butt in a miata.

I just checked portland and seattle Craigslist.

$1000 beater in Portland
$4000 looks nice in Portland
$4500 looks nice in Seattle

GTX land = West Coast?

Sounds like a fun car.

According to my friend who is building one into a race car, they have chocolate gearboxes. I would guess that is running about 350hp. Mitsi EVOs are less understeery than WRXs and an earlier EVO might fit.

The answer is, Miata.

5 sp limited slip is the hot ticket for autocrossing.

The only Evo he's finding for under $6k is one with a blown up engine.

And also has been rolled.

Honestly it's difficult to find either an Evo or WRX for under $10k that isn't totally beat or riced out. Stupid people ruin a lot of good cars.

I've had two E36 cars, never again. Great to drive but piss poor build quality. I wouldn't go any newer than an E30.

Mid-engined FTW

Matt, I know you've probably thought about 914's... with very few mods, some good tires, and a smooth driving technique, they will absolutely rock an autocross course unless it's one requiring gobs of HP to cover longish straights... here's a '75 for $5K:

John, honestly yes it had occurred to me, I was surprised that nobody suggested it. There's a bit of left brain vs right brain going on here, because while I know that a Japanese car would be reliable and cheap to run I would likely miss that Porsche magic. I've been eyeing the 944 and 914 because it's easy to find a nice one for cheap. 914 has particular appeal because it's mid engined and still has a horizontally opposed motor.

I did not recommend a 914 tho they make a hell of an AX car....no, can be made into a hell of an AX car would be more truthful. After 12 years of making one into such, I feel qualified to speak on them.

The only difference between 914 & an early 911 ownership is the cost of entry.
The downside ( besides rust) of the 914 is the original motor. The 3 main bearing T-4 is.......oh,what the hell, a POS. Start by replacing that with a decent motor and it doesn't look too friendly cause you still have a long way to go...BTDT. At that, the CSP Miatas still kicked my ass.

A self serving pic. .....
