Need a new TV
Mine burned up about 5 minutes before the SuperBowl. Screen flickered, got a couple of buzzes and then POOF..Smoke comes out the top! I did have another TV so it was OK and took all of the 5 minutes to swap out....saw the game.
Anyway, where would you go to get a new one, Costco? Best Buy? Also, with these new TV's do you suggest the extended warranties? Been a long time since I bought a TV so HALP!

OLED is the best and most $$$ you need to decide on size; Costco is always a good, tho limited deal |

I was in costco the other day and was oggling at the 80" LED TV's. $4500 is a lot of coin to drop on a TV though.
I hear HH Greg has really good prices on TVs

As my EE professor said.
All electronics are run on smoke. If you let the smoke out, they dont work anymore.

Consider one with a surround sound if you don't have one. I'm partial to Sony, but I have a friend at Sony Studios who gets me killer deals like 40% of list.

Can't beat Costco for how they will handle your warranty! Don't bother with the pimple faced minimum wage kids at WorstBuy unless you know exactly what you want.

Rooster,
What size are you looking for? I picked up a low end LED backlit, 42" LCD TV for under $400 last month. Deals.ebay.com has 32" LCDs, 720P for $214.99

+1.
The XBR would be awesome if you can swallow the premium. In Ohio, Sam's Club has VIZIO. These tv's are a tremendous value. 90+% of Sony picture at 60% of the price. Walmart sells VIZIO as well but they are a little bit more $$ than Sam's Club. |

Let's see if I have this right:
Plasma fades over time and will lose it's colors. Do not use if your room will bathe the TV in sunlight as this will speed the fade. LEDLCD is expensive but tends to last for a very, very long time. LCD gives good color and long life but can be expensive when the bulbs do finally burn out. We LOVE our Sharp Aquos (Wife bought two and one for her parents 36", 42", and 48"?)! Bought a higher end Philips (7 series unlike the 3 series found at the chain stores) for my Mom, EVERYONE talks about how great the picture quality is and how sharp the resolution is! It is a 36". Friends and family have bought Sylvania, Samsung, LG, etc with varying degrees of not liking the picture quality after a couple of months. Buddy who repairs these things sees almost zero Pioneer (no longer made), Sharp, Philips, and Toshiba. He sees a few Sony but not too many considering the number sold. He makes his living off the other brands. Of course, your results and opinions may vary... I'd suggest finding an independent shop! You may pay a few dollars more but check the model versus model number. There is a reason the big box store has what might appear as the same item for about $50.00 less. The innards are different and most likely lower quality. It is how THEY make their money. But if you throw them away in two years or so and are happy with that....

$600
Costco - VIZIO 47" Class 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV I tend to be in the "good enough" crowd. I don't need the best tv ever made by man. My tv looks good to me (Phillips, similar specs to the one above, but in 40").

G-beck - there 2 types of LED TV's - the common one just uses LEDs to illuminate the LCD shutters instead of using fl. tubes for that purpose -- the expensive ones use OLEDs (O = organic!, but not USDA approved...) to form the image pixels
those thinking about a purchase may want to wait for the Apple TV also check this out too: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/09/technology/personaltech/is-this-living-room-big-enough-for-my-tv.html?_r=1&hp - there are several other threads on this topic if you can find them |
