Great movie. Made during Mann's best period. I really liked the anti-hero angle
SPOILER ALERT and how his new partner goes rogue at the end. And how Peterson gets killed. When they found out the guy they robbed was a fed--I was blown away. This movie really introduced me to Peterson as a great actor. My wife always points out how bow-legged he is though.

This one, Ronin and French Connection are my favorite car chases, in that order

Car chases are clique for action movies...they have been over done and are now boring.

People cite Ronin and this and great car chases- two great 'car chase' directors- Friedkin and Frankenheimer...
I am sure the wrong-way chase in LA inspired the wrong way part in Ronin- both directors use the same cue- they show the drivers and then show the 'wrong way' sign, zoomed in, and the music changes... and they head for it. It's brilliant.

Michael Mann got on my radar when he created "Miami Vice" (the TV show - not the movie). That show had STYLE....and always a gripping crime story.
Another fav. of mine he did is "HEAT". Epic storyline and cast. I never get tired of watching it, just like "To Live and Die in LA". As far as car chases go.....aren't they ALL good in their own way?

Sorry for the misunderstanding...I did not say "To Live and Die in LA" was a Michael Mann film.
What I said was I liked what he did with "Miami Vice" and "Heat". But I respect your passion for accuracy! I'm the same way...

Another long time fan of this movie. Good music (to me) and just fun to watch...

Watched Manhunter last night- that's some Michael Mann right there. The guy has a feel down, that is for sure. Lots of long shots of silhouetted people, places, with ominous music playing.
Miami Vice with serial killers. I'm not a big serial killer movie guy though, so To Live and Die is still higher on my list.

A remake? Why not just watch the original? If the original is so good that is. The story is the story. Unless you are looking for updated special effects. That's not something that ever interests me.

One of my favorites also. One that should be left alone and NOT remade. . . .I think I still have the cassette of the soundtrack somewhere, maybe even in the door pocket of the 911
. Great driving music.
