The 1911 edition of EB is the pinacle of scholarship that they never attained again...WW1 killed off a lot of the contributeres....As such it has a great deal of collectability... I have that set and am missing one volume... LOL..SHALL WE TRY $3500.00 http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=1094916404&searchurl=sortby%3D1%26tn%3Dencyclopedia%2Bbritann ica%26x%3D74%26y%3D11 Now don't we feel like an idiot...

I wonder if "subtle" was referenced anywhere in the 1911 EB.

When I was a kid, I had an encyclopedia from the early 30's and I loved it! I had a few contemporary sets of encyclopedias, but the "vintage" set was the one I enjoyed the most!

Just bought a full set of Collier's 1969 edition last month. Included were several books of classic literature etc.. included was the wooden book case all for the grand total of $20.

I used to like reading the encyclopedia when I was a kid. Is that wierd?
Printed media is dead.

I hope it's not dead. I still find a lot of satisfaction in holding printed information in my hand as well as the idea of owning those documents. I would go along with "on life-support."

I have discovered that subtlety is lost on the majority of Americans...I ahhhh mean morons...You have to hit them over the head with a club to not only wake them up, but get their attention...otherwise they blighty keep on walking on as if nothing has ever happened.

Perhaps. However, I suspect that the majority of Americans would find little to hold their interest here in PPOT. I'm not the smoothest operator here but outright incivility has a home (hole) in PARF which many avoid for that very reason.

I do vividly remember reading one of the yearly update books. Just reading through it they had the list of some of the new words. One was astronaut which I had heard of. The other new word was hippy. I had not heard that and their definition did not help me. It was "one who is hip".

Love the interweb and all of the electronica but I can't get past the part about the printed word being the PRINTED WORD.
(get off my lawn, etc...) SWMBO and I are both materials scientists/metallurgists. We're buying all of the good references of the 1930s-1970s period for the end times. Will trade them with the neighbors for ammo when we need to... But really - reference books are cool. A time capsule on a page.

My wife's business partner gave us a set of EB circa 1983 to "get rid of". We had a yard sale and they didn't even get a 2nd look. We eventually donated them to Good Will. Kind of sad when you think of it. I remember too as a kid pouring through them page after page. That, and National Geographic. LOL! I think NG was where I saw my first set of naked boobs.

Mr Pav...Familarity breeds contempt. There are lots of bright, well edicated and successful people on this Board. However that does not mean that they know a dam thing. I can spot the limitations in the thinking of the best and the brightest. I think of it either in terms of being stuck by a road block, or their inability to find their way out of a maze. For so many anything beyond the visceral either is a mystery or just plain does not exist.
