OEM Vs. Genuine Porsche Parts

Okay, so we all know that most OEM parts have a 1 year warranty as opposed the 2 year warranty carried by the Genuine Porsche parts, but I want to know what else is different (except the price )

I understand a lot of parts are just straight out of the manufacturer's catalog i.e. A/C compressors, but what about specifically Porsche-designed parts like synchro rings?

What I assume happens is once an OEM is awarded a contract they take the Porsche drawings and use that to create needed tooling and then manufacture as per the the Porsche specs. Once they finish the production run (or maybe before they finish) they begin making the parts on their own. Are these parts physically the same in every way as the ones you can get at the dealer? Does the OEM pick their own specifics like tolerances and metallurgy?

OEM means the same manufacturer makes it. It does not always mean the same spec. Porsche crank bearings for example. The Porsche ones are each individually mic'd in three spots before going out. The OEM ones are not (and lately have has issues). For critical stuff like this I started buying Porsche, because of the aforementioned issues.

Wayne has explained this in the past as it applies to Pelican and Porsche.

CStreit,

I didn't know that about the engine bearings. What other items do you turn to Porsche for? You just go down to the local dealer?

Rod bolts? Valves? I was going to buy aftermarket valve guides and rod bolts, and head studs.

Just did some parts replacement in the SC's trany, Syncros, syncro teeth.
was told to go with genuine Porsche parts. as others would not last near as long.
How is one to know what parts to use for each job?
And then there is the coil?

Confused Richard
